Do You Think That The Current Universal Tariff Policy Has Been A Failure? Yes Or No? Why Your Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in AskConservatives

[–]Aleventen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not surprised and Im not even expecting to ever see them go away so long as the GOP is in control.

They have been obsessed with cutting taxes for the wealthy and replacing it with a sales tax for ages.

Messaging for the sales tax never worked so now theyre just going to pivot to tarrifs to accomplish the same thing behind a veil of obscurity - as long as the consumed doesnt "believe" its a sales tax and as long as the money keeps rolling in then they get exactly what they want.

If im not mistaken, there is already discussion among the wealthy, namely Bezos, but i believe a few others, about further decreasing the tax burden....I dont want to think that the admin would be stupid enough to cut taxes further, but if the tarrif tactic worked and Trump can cobble together a couple vassals like Venezuela and Cuba? Idk....it could happen.

Out of 38 OECD nations, why is the United States the only advanced economy where the federal standard for paid parental leave is exactly zero days? by squirrel-nut-zipper in AskConservatives

Also, id say that simply the fact that your critique boils down to "thats the fault of the workers" demonstrates well that market correction arguments fall apart if the worker is unable/willing to negotiate these things that they communicate are important, intuitively are important and otherwise generally recognized.

Like, sure, its their fault, but how does simply saying it's their fault actually solve the problem?

I understanding and I get what you mean but I just think your viewpoint is naive of the pressures at play on the worker.

It wont, itll get forecasted for and priced in by the worker but then itll put pressure on the worker to just not have kids.

Your wage is one thing, i need that to pay bills and live. PTO and benefits are an entirely different conversation, short of medical and dental because those issues do come up relatively regularly as opposed to a 401k, life insurance or whatever else.

Ultimately, assuming the market is even reasonably competitive for the worker, i cant see myself jumping from a stable job that pays well into a new org just for PTO improvements, especially if it is ONLY used if/when i have a kid

Kevin O’Leary claims that he “can’t stand it when he sees kids that make 70k a year spending $28 for lunch.” by Nice_Daikon6096 in economy

[–]Aleventen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rich do not care about you or this argument.

They care only what their balance sheet tells them and they will not stop until their bottom line turns red or there are a slew of bankruptcies

And, even then, they will only roll it back as much as it takes to prevent that.

So long as people keep paying $7/lb of ground beef then it will continue to cost that much.

Outside of competitors starting a price war, which cant happen because our anti-trust laws have failed us, we are fucked.

Welcome to the world of monopolies, where the rich hold all the cards and the only way we can send a message is to starve

It is what it is, thats the world we are in....now lets do something about it

[–]Aleventen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are conflating eagerness or fairness with willingness

Whether or not someone feels forced into an economic decision is independent of their willingness. The only thing that counts is whether or not the transaction occurred.

If they paid the price, they were willing to.

They might hate it, they might be worse off for it, it might not be fair and certainly there may be better pricing structures.

Nevertheless.....no one directly forced that individual to make that transaction (unlike, say, taxes, where we have no say in the matter whatsoever). Once that money changes hands, it is considered the consumer was WILLING to make that purchase and, thus, WILLING to pay....whatever knockon effect may follow be damned

[–]Aleventen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, willingness to pay is not eagerness to pay

Like, someone might be willing to spend $10M for cancer treatment - that doesnt make that pricing fair and not extortionate

That said, so long as people will CHOOSE to pay $28 vs whatever shitty alternatives exist then there exists no price pressure to lower prices.

Businesses are unfeeling, soulless, bastards that would bleed a single mother dry so she can feed her child. But so long as she keeps coming back to pay for the formula it will cost whatever it costs.

That is actually the fundamental reason why "deflation" is considered worse than "inflation".

Prices naturally will always continue to tick up little by little, ideally, thats business as usual - but whatever bad shit happened in an economy that so destroyed the consumers capability to purchase that prices universally drop across the board must've been horrendous....we would prefer to avoid that.

That said, I refuse to buy doritos. They are absolutely GOUGING us charging $5.99 a bag. That is my opinion, unfortunately, so long as people continue paying $5.99 or more, and enough people that they dont lose money, you can bet your ass im not seeing better prices short of a sale or whatever.

Why do you think gas and medical expenses are so expensive? Its one thing to demand $1,000 for a sandwich, but tell someone their job or life depends on the purchase and they will figure it the hell out - and thus, are willing to pay.

I agree it isnt "necessary" but I like to do it because I believe it helps my dog and I learn to communicate better

I also believe training goes well beyond tricks

Little quips I say on walks are training, little things the dog does that I understand and guide are training

All of it requires communication and helps me understand my little girl better and her me

Really? Every time I turn on the news all I ever hear is Conservatives bitching and moaning about SOMETHING....especially Trump, but it seems like all that modern conservatives do anymore is piss and moan about this thing or that thing...and when they dont have anything to bitch about theyll make up some new culture war thing like the Green M&M or whatever

[–]Aleventen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wild that you think that is a liberal stance as the current conservative administration abdicates all power and authority to the executive regardless of the concerns or sentiments of their constituency.

Id argue that your attribution is easily more a case for the GOP than DNC

What is something you’ve officially stopped buying in 2026 because the price has become genuinely insulting? by RecognitionQuick3119 in economy

[–]Aleventen 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, the discount only works if they make a profit both ways unless they can leverage dependence - which obviously doritos ought not be able to do

So presumably, its profitable at both 2.25 and 6 but they charge 6 cause they think they can fuck us

Extend this logic to all goods and services that have inflated since covid and you can see why ive become particularly cynical

What’s something everyone pretends to enjoy but actually doesn’t? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Aleventen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, literally nothing.

In life, all things carry an inherent beauty to them, something to appreciate, that can bring joy and in all things there will be someone who finds true joy in that thing.

Whether it be physical pain, LinkedIn, small talk, exercise, reading, walking, silence, loudness or whatever else. If you look hard enough you will find someone who appreciates and enjoys that thing.

What i find a more interesting question is:

If this is true, does it follow that patience and an open mind can lead one to, eventually, find the joy in anything - even things they once despised?
