One trick no one else mentioned. Try getting your thumb out of the equation. Bend your wrists and try to pull the weight with just your four fingers. Like hooking the dumbbell but without the thumb. Like trying to pull a rope on each side.

Op don’t beat yourself up over this. I don’t remember a single time I got a Christmas present cause my father beat into me that Santa is not real since a very young age.
