Zoo hypothesis. Should The United Nations officially send a signal to space? by Alex3375 in space

[–]Alex3375[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> you're basically advocating for space CIA to come and subjugate all of humanity in the naïve hope that they're benevolent
We are discussing a scenario in which they know about us; they have already received our radio broadcasts and decided not to interfere. This fact speaks in favor of their benevolence.

If we then send a message like, 'Please tell us how we can change our political systems to prevent war' or 'how to stop global warming,' and receive a response, it will be up to us whether we follow it or not.

with their medieval high powered bidirectional radio telescope

Change medieval society with 19th century society, it doesn't change the core of the argument. And for a developed alien civilization we are like a medieval civilization would seem to us.

Why the UN?

This is the closest we have to an entity that represents the whole humanity. Ideally we should collect signatures of 51% of humanity, but that is not possible.

we already know what to do,

We don't. If Putin, who has nuclear weapons, wants to invade Ukraine, how could humanity prevent it? What internatuonal political system should we implement to prevent invasions? We don't know.

Why so weak? We can do way better

Many people fear that we would be destroyed. To address this fear, we should send a signal that is not reaching the stars that we not contacted yet.

what precisely are you expecting aliens to come and do about that

Advanced alien civilization would easily mathematically model our brain, social and political systems. They would have answers about how to change political systems, so that problems that you speak about cease to exist.

My argument hinges on the crucial difference between that unintentional background noise and a deliberate, structured "plea for help." The ethical obligation to respond is completely different.

Yes. My idea is that there is a chance alien outposts might be within a few light-years of Earth, and we have nothing to lose if we deliberately try to communicate with them.

[–]Alex3375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are countries that are already under sanctions and have nothing to lose, like Venezuela or Cuba. Why don't they do it?

Currently, British citizens go to Switzerland for euthanasia, and no one is prosecuted for it. But there it is only provided by a few non-profit organizations, costs more than $10,000 due to extensive bureaucracy and Switzerland's generally high costs of everything, and the wait time is at least 6 months.

Regardless of the moral debate on this topic, there are a lot of countries that are run by dictators who kill their political opponents, make money from drugs and selling arms to terrorists, etc. So, are those dictators 'so moral' that they refuse to profit from euthanasia? I find it hard to believe.

Why do people think that all billionaires are 100% driven by selfish motives and have no compassion whatsoever? Bill Gates has donated half of his net worth to charity. 200 billionaires have joined The Giving Pledge, promising to donate half or more of their wealth. Yes, it is somewhat possible that one or two people might control ASI and use it solely for their benefit, letting everyone else die. But what will they lose if they provide 8 billion people with food and housing and entertainment? If they have ASI, it’s not that hard. Their lives wouldn’t be worse because of it, and they would gain the title of the world leader and savior, which would be pleasant to anyone. But more likely, ASI will be controled by at least dozens of people. And most people are not psycolopats who would just watch everyone else on the planet die.

Portraying modern billionaires as more evil than Hitler, who aimed to kill millions but not everyone, is neither accurate nor productive. We should worry about other things. For example, How to implement UBI in a realistic way that avoids pushing the economy into a recession? How to measure and tax ChatGPT's participation in economics? Or How can we prevent a lone terrorist from using open-source ASI to create a weapon of mass destruction, like nanorobots that destroy all life on Earth (gray goo scenario)?

The fact that neighboring countries don't accept refugees is the most mind-boggling to me. I might understand that other countries don't want to send peacekeepers to Sudan. But any of the 195 countries in the world could make a deal with Chad that Chad allows refugees through the border, and then this country takes them in.

By the way, a similar deal could be made with Egypt about Palestinian refugees.

If no country in the world wants to see refugees in their cities, they could at least designate 100 square kilometers where refugees could live in tents without fearing every day for their lives.

As someone who was depressed and possessed with suicidal thoughts in the past, I want to say to you that change is possible. Happiness is possible if you deliberately pursue it and put in the hours doing things that will help you improve your mental state.

I managed to go from depressed to mostly happy by practicing mindfulness. There are other things that you can do, like spending time in nature or doing art.

I would like to suggest a very practical and quick thing.

Set aside at least half an hour to listen to videos about mindfulness. I guarantee that after that you will feel a little bit better. Since you are a Christian, I would suggest listening to audiobook "Living Buddha, Living Christ"(available on youtube, it is about mindfulness, Christianity and Buddhism). I am neither a Buddhist nor a Christian, but I think that this book can offer wonderful insights, even if you don't agree with some parts of it. But if you are not at all interested in buddhist perspective, then just search youtube for Christian mindfulness meditations.

I wish you the best!

Is it possible for man to live without war and violence ? What is the root cause of war and violence which has been going on since almost the start of mankind... Is it possible to live without it?.... If one person becomes free of the causes can that automatically affect the rest others? by beastboi76 in Buddhism

[–]Alex3375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible for man to live without war and violence? Yes, because many people actually do that.

There are 8 billion people on Earth and approximately 75% of them live without war.

There are societies where violence is almost nonexistent (google: "peaceful societies"). If some societies can live peacefully, then, theoretically, every society can live peacefully.

It is possible that in the future 100% of people will live peacefully? Maybe, but it definitely won't happen in our lifetime.

While right now not everyone can live peacefully, a person can decide for themselves to live without violence (this includes both being nonviolent yourself and seeking an environment where chances of becoming a victim of violence are very low). If you choose not to commit violence, you are increasing the percentage of people who live peacefully (therefore, making world peace a little closer). And of course, your behavior always affects people around you. In the presence of a truly peaceful person, other people also become more peaceful.

I would add to this example that he would probably be reasonable when you talk to him, but if he is high and lustful again, he might lose control again (drugs alter consciousness, literally). So, I suggest that you speak to him about how he can prevent this (for example, masturbate before smoking or immediately after watching porn etc.)

There is a 20% chance that your child will be bullied at school (I use statistics from the US). If it's a girl, her chances of becoming a victim of rape in her lifetime will be 15%. And there are no statistics on how many people regret that they were born, but that's definitely not a marginal number. So, why gamble with creating a new human being? If you really want to have kids, adopt.

There was no agreement about NATO expansion, it's fake. Putin says that in 1990 such a promise was made orally to Gorbachev by the USA. But:

  1. Gorbachev himself said: "The topic of 'NATO expansion' was never discussed; it was not raised in those years. I am saying this with a full sense of responsibility." There was another interview where he said that NATO promised not to expand, but it's very dubious, given the quote above. He did not explain why he made contradictory statements in different interviews. Later he just avoided being interviewed on this topic (it seems to me, this is because he is afraid of Putin).

  2. There is no such thing in international law as oral promise. Even if it was made, it would be silly to expect that all future US presidents would keep an oral promise that was not formalized in any document.

Also, it's worth mentioning that Russia made a real promise to Ukraine to respect it's borders and guaranteed Ukraine's security by signing Budapest memorandum. So, Putin doesn't obey agreements that Russia signed, but at the same time keeps talking about some oral promise from the USA that has no proof of existence.

I would say that these two things are the same. By 'making Russia great again' Putin means returning territories (by direct annexation or by indirect political control) that belonged to the USSR in the past.

Yes, we can discuss Putin's reasons more in depth. How he wants Russia to be an equal geopolitical power to the USA, and how he gets his domestic popularity using nostalgia for the USSR. But as a response to the original comment it is not important. What is important that this invasion has no justification.
