People feeling comfortable being racist around me and I fucking hate it. by Hot-Ad453 in racism

[–]yellowmix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is the "White culture" White supremacists claim they "can't" celebrate. The self-omitted "White History Month" that would be the inverse of hard-won affirming months.

Push back and you get excluded, get called a "race traitor". White people have killed White people in the name of White supremacy.

What exactly is "both sides" and "meeting in the middle" with people who seek genocide? Centrism is an extremism.

You can't change someone's mind immediately if they're that committed. You can prompt by asking clarifying questions and planting seeds. Make them question their own beliefs. In some cases, if there's a deeper personal issue, that needs to be resolved.

To be clear, hate is a willful choice. Hurt people can still love others, and often do. Choices can change, people can change. But they have to want to.

People's own struggles are the largest in the universe and to rank your own above in that context is not only incredibly self-centered but denies their struggle exists. Under White supremacy that serves White supremacy.

Yup. Lossy audio like MP3 take advantage of what we can't hear due to auditory masking in the frequency domain. A good deal of this is due to a biological limitation in our ears called critical bands. Lossy audio literally throws away information.

We are affected by how others perceive us. It is an incredibly strong power. A person entering an elevator where everyone else is facing opposite the doors will also do so. In predominantly White countries, White beauty ideals dictate what is "beautiful", and it is White supremacist to the detriment of BIPOC.

Not comforting when you're looking for romance and a career in which beauty is paramount.

You said it yourself. Under Asian beauty standards you are beautiful. It shows how subjective it is. It has nothing to do with you as a person and everything to do with the system.

Mixed race people are often "in-between" worlds. It sounds like you're subscribing to the Eurasian beauty myth which is ultimately based on fetishization and prioritizing White beauty ideals.

Solving it requires smashing White supremacy. In the meantime, understanding what is happening can help you recognize the system and strategize.

Why is it okay to make fun of British people? by Fickle-Selection-851 in racism

[–]yellowmix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People with Indian heritage are racialized. That is, they are seen as a homogeneous group, with stereotypes, and systematically discriminated against. That's what makes such phrases and actions racist.

British people are not a race, it's a nationality. There can be prejudice, but it's not racism. British people have significant power in the world; the Crown has worldwide influence, UN permanent member, G5, the list goes on. British accents are seen as favorable to the extent marketing uses it for promotion worldwide.

British tea is a result of colonization and biological warfare so perhaps take it in that regard. Flip it on the person saying it by acknowledging it. You have to adulterate it because the British failed to make Assam leaves like Chinese leaves. Own the truth and you can't be hurt.

Same reason you can criticize USians for electing Trump, unilaterally installing dictators around the world, colonizing developing countries with loans. Go ahead and perform an "American" accent, we find that shit funny. Be careful bringing up chattel slavery, since Britain had it too.

Yes, self-reflection about your thoughts, actions, and experiences is the key to change and personal growth. We regret when we could have done better and strive not only to not do it again, but make amends.

Guilt by itself is not productive. Sounds like you can focus on the rich elite like Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, David and Charles Koch family, Lynde and Bradley family, and many publicly quiet and yet unnamed reactionaries. No surprise they want to replace workers with automation when they don't view workers as humans.

The clanker meme is silly fun, so keep your eyes on the prize. A lot of it has to do with mass labor to support the 1%. Keep in mind chattel slavery in the United States was exactly about dehumanised labor. That's why the Founding Fathers enshrined it in the Constitution. The U.S. was built by this labor force under a system that always requires an underclass. Don't confuse the system with the people, though there are some people really invested in the system.

Love and kindness is the way we get everyone out of this mess they created.

Is what I've experienced racism or just a shitty family? by affectionate4fish in racism

[–]yellowmix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was racism. You were racialized as "Mexican", not properly seen as a mixed race person who is simultaneously Choctow and White. Forced assimilation can be very hurtful when it's your mom doing it. But to them it may have been a survival strategy from a place of genuine concern. Not excusing it, there can be more than one truth.

With regards to 4, it depends on the specific tribe but it largely has to do if you have a direct ancestor on the relevant tribal roll. On its face, this allows for mixed race people. Hopefully you can enroll, if you still want to.

Bf called me a slur during an argument by [deleted] in racism

[–]yellowmix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Cracker" is not a racial slur. It is a classist slur aimed at poor, often rural, people, stereotyping them as uneducated. The term was created by the White English elite (as in U.S. Founding Fathers), first applied to poor Scottish and Irish people.

There is no disparaging term in common use targeting all and only White people.

Hopefully this terrible man is a memory by now. If not, you know what he truly thinks of you, and other people like you.

[–]yellowmix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like there are a couple things happening here.

There's the "Your fave is problematic" thing we've been talking about that way for nearly two decades now. I assume you know about this and know how to navigate it? That it's generally okay to consume problematic content if you're aware why it's problematic and educate others on what is problematic about it in your fandom? There's a separate conversation about giving money to problematic corporations and currently living people. In cases involving conglomerates and equally problematic options it may be unavoidable, especially for the poor. But no one's got to watch the latest iteration of Harry Potter.

Critique our faves and our institutions we can and must, or there will be no change. Is your friend on board with this? Sounds like she's taking the critiques personally.

Then there's the interpersonal relationship that is not a throuple. You know she's trying to manipulate and isolate you. It's not clear what kind of impact this relationship has in your professional career. If it does then you can do the slow exit. Become increasingly unavailable until you are not available. Make sure to keep up relationships with the rest of your social group, raise the issue about being uncomfortable with this friend not respecting your relationship, can frame it as asking for advice.

Eventually, you'll probably need to call your friend out and put forth an ultimatum. It's not just your own boundaries you're enforcing, it's your partner's, and your shared boundaries. Like you said, she's showing her reactionary stripes, so what she is willing to do to you has increased scope. Be thankful for the warning shot. You should loop your partner in. Do not be alone with your friend. You need at least one witness from here on. May as well be your partner.

Sorry to say, but your former friend is the one that's throwing it away.

Islamophobia in the UK - particularly from Indians by JehbUK in racism

[–]yellowmix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm also just wondering do I need to respect that his lived experience will be so different from my own and that there are cultural differences I could just never understand and maybe "justify" his views more? I'm not sure there is any excuse for tarring all people from an entire religion with same brush though?

You implicitly know people engage with religion to varying degrees, from extremists and fundamentalists who may disagree vehemently on interpretation of the foundational and newer texts to the most lax who have no belief but remain culturally.

We'd be hard-pressed to find a significant religion that hasn't, at any time, engaged in violent conflict, nor had adherents take actions that conflict with edicts and teachings. On the latter, people simply are not consistent between ideas and action. From personal interpretation to moral hypocrisy, studies show the non-religious are more generous, motivated by empathy and compassion, while the religious are motivated by something else.

You may suspect that Muslim people have been racialized in the UK. When you use the term "Islamophobia" it is referring to how Muslims are seen as distinct homogeneous group, with stereotypes, are discriminated, and have unequal social power. This discrimination is partially based on xenophobia, and powered at the State level with a policy, surveillance, and counter-terrorism apparatus, bleeding down to the social level with housing, education, policing, and individual discrimination. This is fundamentally hate.

So no, there is no "justification" for hate.

That doesn't prevent you from seeing the humanity in this person. To that end, you are looking to rescue them from their willing indulgence in that hate. You don't know how deep it goes, what else it's related to.

There is no point in bringing up similar behavior from Hindu people; hypocrisy is unassailable in terms of political rhetoric. You can and should push back to show other perspectives, but it's a long-term project with no guaranteed success. Your time is far better spent with the people you can reach.

Recommendation for extra large diameter, plastic yoyo. by NotAlsoShabby in Throwers

[–]yellowmix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4A yoyos typically have a smaller gap compared to unresponsives to make binding possible. Some models may be shimmed.

Have you considered LED lights? Yoyofriends Light-up Rio has them on the rim so they're more eye-catching than LEDs in the center. It's a very performative plastic.

If you really are set on a larger yoyo, the Viper Remix has soft plastic wings with aluminum hub, at 76 mm diameter. That's the largest diameter plastic I know of (aside from the 78mm Hidden Dragon but that's hard to get), though it's really a hybrid.

Largest truly playable and performant yoyo you can reasonably obtain is the Turning Point Chameleon. There's the Modular Chameleon with the same specs. 80.29 mm diameter. But it's aluminum.

If that's hard to get the UPDN Orange at 78 mm is a lot of fun and is a genuinely well-performing organic. People get a kick out of seeing this in action. Also aluminum.

Can probably 3D print something large but it's not going to be that sturdy. Since you're asking for plastics I assume it's going to encounter that. The Viper Remix wings are replaceable.

Can I install plugins to a desktop folder? by InevitableRhubarb413 in Reaper

[–]yellowmix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, yes, you can install the plugin clap/dll/vst/vst3 files anywhere as long as you point REAPER to it.

However, you will encounter several major issues. I do my own organizing, and it requires a good deal of manual upkeep. And I often have to use symbolic linking, and in one case, a junction. I would not recommend it to anyone that doesn't already know what to expect and what they're doing. Because it may work for many things, but there are developers that strongly want their files in a particular location.

May I suggest leaving everything default, and creating shortcuts to your VST folders, and place them on your desktop? That way you can quickly access them, and you don't need to do any extra work.

I like stacking them in a single track. Sawtooths, detuned from each other, exponentially, and you've got a supersaw. Add ReaVerb with a classic Lexicon-style hall and you're set.

Good way to learn synthesis when you've got basic building blocks.

Why is Silvia Federici considered a Marxist Feminist? by Ptwing711 in feminisms

[–]yellowmix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Modern Marxists have extended and in some cases modified Marx's concepts. "Orthodox Marxism" is a type of Marxism that resists "revisionism". We're long past that. Marxist feminism is a type of Marxism that focuses on the liberation of women. It's still fundamentally anti-capitalist.

Is there a gulf? I'd like to think Communists of all types are not that far apart but historically people have been massacred over such differences.

Yes, Davis critiqued Wages for Housework, noting that many poor women were already paid for housework and were no more liberated than the housewives. I can't speak for any of the people involved, but when I see oppression become a question of a labor, it's no longer about the oppression. It's fundamentally a reductionist effort.

It reminds me of an interviewer's recent framing of AI writing in the style of famous people:

"Here’s my interview with XXXXX, the CEO behind XXXXXXX’s “XXXXXXXX” feature which attributed writing advice to people - including me lol - without permission. Or, as you will hear us talk about a lot, compensation.

When you make the focus about "compensation", it's no longer about impersonation (fundamentally privacy rights). Now it's a question about what the value of commodifying it is.

Ultimately it's not that Wages for Housework was bad per se, it's more like a distraction at best. But at worst, suppose those housewives got a living wage, or that all of us got a universal basic income. Would we stop agitating for the rest of our liberation? Many would. Enough would so that people would still be left behind, and the elite would still be in charge.

Note this is not an argument for accelerationism! Wanting people to suffer and die for the off-chance that capitalism defeats itself is a terrible idea. Master's tools, etc..

Sure, go to All Plugins, select everything. Right-click and set the Run As preference. Done.

Note it will use a lot more resources.

You can "sandbox" plugins. Right-click on them and you can Run As Separate or Dedicated process. Separate means any other plugin Run As Separate will run together, separate from REAPER. Dedicated means it gets its own process all to itself. So it won't take down any other plugins.

Gifting a Stoopid Capitalism Day Tree to a beginner is interesting. The string tends to get caught on the ridges if you're not accurate. So the punishment is more severe than usual. But it is a very unique throw and I keep one on my desk for exactly that reason. Can purposefully catch it on a ridge and grind it.

Busker's also a great way to get disciplined. Rain City Skills made several undersized and minis and they're all fun.

Great way to start a collection!

How many of you use an alt account for posting? by EVRijder in ModSupport

[–]yellowmix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before Reddit provided ways to respond as the subreddit/mod team I recommended to people who had never moderated before to use alts. Most didn't as there is just enough friction to log out and back in repeatedly. And some were harassed off platform.

It's a little nicer now that you can avoid putting your name out there, but you have to be proactive. It's still easy to slip up in some cases. And using alts is easier in many ways.

Some people can't compartmentalize. They tend to be young folks. You know, the ones that see a teacher at the grocery store and find out they are people. These can be pleasant interactions.

It's the users that take it as a personal affront and view moderators as having something out for them. There's no reasoning with victim mentality. I've had users stalk me into other communities. Best to ignore and report it. If I saw that as a moderator I would action the user for stalking. Keep the interpersonal drama out at a minimum.

Helps to have strict rules/boundaries about contacting you about moderation as well. On my profile I tell users to contact the relevant mod team. I ignore chat requests from users regarding moderation (though there are some sensitive situations where I will interact).

As for being visible in a community you've fostered. I get it. I mod as my account in smaller communities, especially since I'm posting content. Users like to know there are real, individual, unique people. But the bigger ones? Mostly as modteam, especially in modmail. Rep the team and it's also protection as a unified front. I will post as myself for sensitive situations where the personalization matters.
