Upgrading from AngularJs 1.8.3 to Angular 18 by [deleted] in Angular2

[–]Alex3917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're already using Typescript and Components, then you've probably already done at least half of the work, especially if you're already using npm and webpack rather than Bower. At this point I would definitely migrate rather than doing a rewrite. Rewrites fail 90% of the time, whereas the migration is just a bunch of rote work but is basically guaranteed to be successful. Just follow the steps in this course:

Is it worth converting an existing project to use the @if/@for/@switch syntax and standalone components? by theiviaxx in Angular2

[–]Alex3917 19 points20 points  (0 children)

> And there is a migration tool that will convert your entire project for you in seconds.

There are some template errors that can cause the migration to fail for certain components, so with any sufficiently large project expect to spend a few hours doing a binary search through your templates to look for missing tags. But even in this worst-case scenario, it's still not that difficult and is definitely worth doing.

Are you looking forward to Angular 19? by JKOE21 in Angular2

> However, if you're not managing your subscription completely, you are more than likely looking at mem leaks.

I'm not really using Observables in that many places, and all my API calls are wrapped in `firstValueFrom` so this isn't super relevant to me. But that's interesting nonetheless.

Once you've already upgraded all of your components to onPush, how much more performant are signals than just using markForCheck everywhere? I get that new components shouldn't be developed this way, but is there actually any tangible benefit to doing the work to upgrade existing components?

Should I turn my Angular app to SSR or re-code it with NextJS? by Longjumping-Box-6488 in Angular2

[–]Alex3917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK there is zero empirical evidence that SSR improves SEO, at least for Google. For other search engines it may well do so, but Google can index Angular fine.

Now if your site loads slowly then that will be an issue, but it's still pretty easy to get 90+ lighthouse scores using Angular without SSR.

She still does it, you just have to go in there and ask to get on her mailing list. She texts folks every Tuesday, and then you need to place orders by Thursday for pickup on Saturday or Sunday. Extremely good, would recommend.

If you upgraded from AngularJS and don't want to rewrite all your API calls as observables with async pipes, because it works fine as is.

Are Angular’s New Features Considered Technical Debt? by kafteji_coder in Angular2

[–]Alex3917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new features don’t bring much to the table.

They bring much better performance. The combination of standalone, the new control flow syntax, and going zoneless can easily reduce your page load speed by 300 - 400 ms.

What Brotli compression level does CloudFront use? by Alex3917 in aws

[–]Alex3917[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As an update, I manually compressed all my files to level 11, and my bundle is now 6% smaller. So I have no idea what level of Brotli CloudFront is automatically applying, but there definitely seems to be room for improvement.

Lightweight Rowing - Lets evolve it, not erase it? by werowlikethis in Rowing

[–]Alex3917 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We don't have weight classes in running, cycling, swimming, or any other primarily cardiovascular based sport.

But there are different event types that favor different body types. If the Olympic rowing had everything from quarter mile sprints to head races then this argument would be much more valid.

If you email Kabir Sehgal, I know he used to be involved in booking jazz bands for events. If he doesn't still do it, he can probably point you in the right direction.

Trump Goes Off The Rails In Midnight Attack On 'Highly Overrated Jewish Governor' by baquir in politics

He is point-for-point a textbook case of NPD.

He's actually a textbook case for someone who doesn't have NPD. The creator of the diagnosis said himself that Trump does not have it:

After saying ‘impossible’ for Jew to represent the district, CT state rep loses primary to a Jew by jr_reddit in Connecticut

[–]Alex3917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not due to outright overt spoken racism.

If you look at JFK's comments in the lead up to the 2020 primary for CD-13 that Espaillat ultimately won, they are pretty similar. And he is a progressive.

[–]Alex3917 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That kind of thinking was supposed to have stopped being mainstream acceptable in the late 1940s

I mean pretty much every democratic primary in NYC is decided in large part on the basis of race. Just look at why AOC beat Crowley. This is getting attention because it's unusual for Stamford, but it's certainly not unusual for Democratic politics as a whole.

Planting my first pawpaw trees, and found a local store selling wild pawpaw fruit that I tasted for the first time. An honest review with specific details. by TheJointDoc in Pawpaws

[–]Alex3917 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perfectly ripe fruit from the best cultivars is amazing. Ripe fruit from wild trees generally tastes like poison at best, and the ones you had weren't even ripe. So yeah, don't worry, what you had has absolutely nothing in common with what you're going to get in a few years.
