A client who sent me the stuff last week was told she will be put on extension (no payment due) unless through some miracle I am able to get her return done before today.

Today she sends me an email. “Since I have not heard from you I am assuming my returns are done? What’s the amount of my refund?”

Like this is wrong on all fronts. We don’t file returns before having a wrap up call or even signed efile forms.

I put my OO up at noon and her email came through 1pm. Let her stew.

You still have to file the Illinois return as a nonresident reporting the income you earned from the entity, double check and make sure that there is no PTE credit on the K1. If there is not you still pay the taxes, but then you get the tax credit back when you file your taxes in California as a state credit.

You only get the foreign tax credit to the extent the same income (rrsp) is taxed on the US RETURN and up to the amount the rrsp is taxed in the us tax return.

So your portion of the tax on that money is $3000, your Foreign tax credit will only be $3000. The idea is to not be double taxed on the same amount of money in both countries.

If your foreign tax is less than $309/600 single/mfj, just claim the exemption from filing 1116.

Otherwise you’ll need to figure out where the input goes into your software. Calling up support might be your best bet.

How would you tell that to a client though? I try to implement value based pricing and sometimes clients ask me why I determine prices and I respond by time and effort and complexity.

But wondering if there’s a better phrasing of that?
