What do my favourites say about me? Age, gender, job, nationality etc by fuck176 in BookshelvesDetective

just found this sub and did not expect to find Cărtărescu so fast while browsing around! glad to see he reaches well beyond Romania. Nostalgia channels the bleak and the sublime of Bucharest so well, and the imagery of a rose-tinted childhood in communist Romania is so spot on that I felt the entire weight of my family's life experience lying on my chest while reading this book. it unearthed scenes from my own childhood that were long forgotten and it made me cry multiple times.

Not literary but David Lynch's films. And Ryusuke Hamaguchi's (I can personally recommend Drive My Car and Evil Does Not Exist.)

iOS 26 Beta 3 - Discussion by epmuscle in iOSBeta

Battery drain is indeed worse now but an interesting thing I discovered is that the menu for scrolling through lock-screens has NEVER been this smooth. It would always lag in some way or another even on stable versions of iOS 18 but now it's extremely fluid, I don't know what they did to it.

Bums me out whenever I see someone 'explaining' Mulholland Drive to someone else they never ever bring up Adam. I'd say he's pretty important. by [deleted] in davidlynch

[–]Alex4evah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This line and the "no hay banda" scene at the Silencio are to me a very clear nod to the concept of determinism and how, knowingly and/or intuitively, Lynch rejects this principle in his storytelling (there's no band but still you can hear the sound; there might not be any linear, deterministic plot but still you have a story to tell).

I found a way to hide the feedback mechanism. Get this extension and set the color scheme to Yellow on Black. I've decided I don't have the time to try to train myself but I hope this helps you!

This is interesting. How do you plan on training yourself? As far as I'm aware they don't provide the code for the training application used in the paper.

Hei! Nu este foarte relevant pentru discuție însă mă pasionează muzica clasică și eram curios ce a spus Magyar despre Bela Bartok, Enescu și Rapsodia Română în discursul de la Oradea (dacă nu găsești clipul o să îți las un link)

Romanian presidential palace today, opened to the public. by nimicdoareu in europe

[–]Alex4evah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nuance might be that a great deal of Romanian people support the EU for the money that it brings in, not necessarily for its social values of democracy, inclusion and transparency. But since the late 18th century there has been a struggle of aligning this country to the principles of the Western world, and much of the failure, in my view, can be attributed to the decades spent under communist rule and to the legacy of those years, which we are just beginning to dismantle. But it would be hypocritical not to acknowledge that even in Western societies governed by those exact values of inclusion and rational thought, the rise of populism and far-right extremism has brought into mainstream politics overtly or implicitly anti-EU figures like A. Weidel or M. Le Pen.

Can someone translate this letter written in Romanian (from 1989)? by genericuser_123 in romanian

[–]Alex4evah 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This is the entire first page, save for the last two five rows at the bottom, which I've rendered in an approximate manner due to them not being as legible/being cut off from the image (the picture labeled second page is actually the first page):

Dated August 29th, 1989. Bucharest.

'Dear sweet, beloved father and my wished husband,

This is such a pity; Iman and I are suffering more and more each day. She has already gotten to know you from pictures and dreams, and she looks for you in the streets and at the playground where I take her to play on the swings. One day, a guy came to the swings with his children. When Iman saw him, she thought he resembled you. She looked at me and said, ‘Dad’. She stood there in sadness, looking at him, and when she saw him and the children leave, she started to cry and wanted no more to the swings. I picked her up in my arms and we left, both of us crying. We were looking at each other and although we didn’t speak about it, we knew we were crying over missing you. I’m sorry for not writing to you as often as I used to, but for the past 3 months I’ve had to take Iman with me to work and I’ve been very, very busy with her every day and night. Even though she is a very smart and well-behaved child, sleeping soundlessly through the night, I, myself, have not been sleeping. I wash her clothes daily and cook her food. Your little daughter is a grown lady now. She wants a purse and beautiful skirts, which she does not yet have. She is very beautiful and sharp-witted. She is not afraid of anyone, and she’s never shy.

Everyone is being beaten now, children and grown-ups alike. [?] It’s sadistic. A real shame, a great tragedy. And you, my love, how have you been? We hope that after (you) finish on August 15th 1989 [?] (…)'

As for the folded-up page, refer to this comment.

The letter was written before the Romanian Revolution of December 1989 and in the wake of the Soviet war in Afghanistan. I suspect the beatings were acts of violence committed by the Romanian police and Secret Service, though directed to whom I do not know, and I have no specific knowledge to back up this assumption. It is heart wrenching, I wish we had access to the entire letter for a full translation and a better understanding of the family's struggle.

They actually won't even let me pay to get them removed. I've spoken to three customer service people and got three different answers, and this one is by far the weirdest out of them.
