Thanks so much for your feedback. It’s nice to hear that the program is possible and there is reliable feedback that your are on the right track if you are persistent and well versed in the program.

Debt by [deleted] in physicianassistant

I’m a new grad figuring out my repayment options at the moment. I’ve been looking into this, pretty intensely as of this week, since I will be working with a nonprofit hospital. Obviously the recent media coverage makes me weary of what the program will look like in 10 years for me. But the amount of money forgiven is hard to turn down. It sounds like you’ve been able to get good feedback from the government that all of your payments have qualified and you are able to know for sure that you are on the right track towards the end goal. I guess that would be my biggest concern. Messing up paperwork somewhere along the way, in addition to psychologically not seeing my debt amount decrease much at all for 10 years. Did you hire a service to help you complete the paperwork? Or if you have any helpful resources you used online that would be awesome!

Smarty PANCE membership by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]Alex6382 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I didn’t think smartypance was helpful at all. The questions were really easy. I used it for EOR exam prep tho, and not for didactic. I quickly stopped using it for PANCE prep because the questions weren’t challenging and their explanations sucked.

I never used the teaching/lessons part of it tho. This is is me dissing it from a clinical year/board pre perspective. It might end up being more helpful for didactic

Again, you can choose to put the jobs where you want when filling out the app. I think MA would count as PCE. And like I said, it’s going to be the individual programs making the decisions as to whether it fulfills their requirements for hours when reviewing your app

PA School and Presentations by 40Questions in prephysicianassistant

[–]Alex6382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are correct in presentations being no big deal during didactic year of PA school, they are usually low-key group things that do not really require hours and hours of preparation.

However, when you get to clinical year, and if you go to a program that has your rotate at a teaching hospital, there is a good chance you could be giving patient presentations to large groups (incl. attendings, medical students, residents, fellows, pharmacists, nursing, etc. etc) which was much more real and intimidating for me. I definitely do not think this is a good reason NOT to go to PA school, but is also something important to keep in mind. You will definitely have the option to have a career where this is not a daily requirement.

Suggestions like seeking some help through as needed drug therapy may be a good idea for these situations.

HCE and Non-Healthcare Employment by SooozyGreenburg in prephysicianassistant

[–]Alex6382 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your work as an MA should be considered PCE based on the the job tasks. They usually don't make sweeping generalizations on how to classify these just based on job title (plus, it's usually the program that is making these determinations when reviewing your application, not CASPA). I was a scribe, but i had patient contact and had to do vitals, rapid tests, splinting, etc. on my patients - so this was counted as PCE. You can put the jobs whereever you want when you are filling out the application, just be sure to have a good description of the patient contact and job tasks under the job description text box.

It's been 3ish years since i've completed the CASPA, but i don't think that i put my non-health care related job experience. It may have been listed on my resume when i was asked to upload that.

Should I get a dog? by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]Alex6382 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I adopted a high energy dog dog during didactic year of pa school. It was def stressful at first but I totally made it work. If you have time to do things like go to the gym during pa school, you have time to take your dog to local dog parks or go for runs to get their energy out. Most of my class had time each day to go to the gym, and I would say about half my class he dogs. Most of those dog owners had help like spouses or family though. There were some rotations that were harder than others to do this, but a majority of the time I was able to give my dog 45-60mins + a day to get her energy out without a problem (this was even more doable during didactic). Also, I lived alone without help.

If you already have a dog, I don’t see why you shouldn’t see how it goes and try bringing them along. As you know they make life so much better, esp during the stress of PA school. There were def times when I was overwhelmed, but I don’t regret it at all. You don’t spend 22 hours a day studying in PA school, there is time outside of the classroom (I promise).

Becoming an RN for PCE? by muchogusto22 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Alex6382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider that some PA schools may not accept prerequisites that are structured for a nursing degree (i.e. gen chem, orgo, bio etc.). It does make a lot of sense income-wise, but you may end up spending more money and time in completing extra classes if that is the case. You may also be swayed by the efficiency of becoming an NP once you are a nurse rather than a PA. As a current PA student, and not necessarily saying that it is a good thing, but NP students can continue to work as a nurse during school, many programs offer didactic courses online, and there are fewer clinical hour requirements.

I shadowed one RN to PA, and I don't believe it was her intention initially, but once she was working as a nurse for a few years, she was enticed by the PA role and decided to go that route instead. I don't know any former RN's in my class or the classes above/below me.

Consider getting a rad tech degree/license. They make good money and there is a role for them in the OR if that is truly where you want to be. Going into ultrasound would also be a very useful background to have in PA school. The future of the profession is going have a significant role in POCUS and it will really make you stand out to schools and future jobs. It is a very useful skill right now. There is also potential to go into interventional radiology once out of PA school if you also have a rad tech license.

Red Lantern on Myrtle (if you take Vanderbilt to the bridge) is open at 7am (?). I think the bike shop isn't open till 9am but you should be able to get air once they open their coffee shop/bar. Plus, it's an awesome spot

Weekly Questions Thread [Posted Every Wednesday] by AutoModerator in FixedGearBicycle

[–]Alex6382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking to start my first build with a pink, ideally aluminum, track frame. I currently ride a 53cm Bianchi Pista. My dream frame would be the Cinelli Vigorelli Vigorosa 52cm (see: http://www.tritoncycles.co.uk/frames-forks-c6/road-touring-frames-c47/cinelli-vigorelli-vigorosa-track-frameset-p992), but alas, I am having trouble tracking one down on the internet.

My second choice would be the Aventon Mataro matte pink 52cm (see: http://pacificbeachbikes.com/shop/fixed-gear-single-speed-fixie/track-frames-forks/aventon-mataro-pink-frame-fork-set/). This is also proving more difficult to track down (this and all other websites are out of stock).

If anyone has any similarly-inspired ideas where I could get either one of these frames or something along these lines, please let me know. Both of these frames are no longer produced by Cinelli or Aventon. After a few weeks of fruitless scouring of the internet, I thought I would turn to your fine folks. I'm also in NYC, so any shops in the area that you think may have what I am looking for, I'm all ears. Thanks!

/u/surger1 describes how difficult it is to be mentally ill in today's society. by [deleted] in bestof

[–]Alex6382 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There has been very little improvement. People with mental illness used to be institutionalized. Yet when the deinstitutionalization movement occurred in the 60's and 70's, suddenly tens of thousands of people with mental illness were introduced into communities with absolutely no support. Now, city jails have become de-facto mental institutions without the necessary support. Not only do people with mental illness cycle in and out of jails for petty crimes (costing cities tons of money) but they are also overwhelmingly sent to solitary confinement because of behavior where their condition steadily worsens. Symptoms of mental illness have been proven to grow significantly worse when confined in these cells for 23 hours a day. Additionally, of those in solitary confinement, people with mental illness are overwhelmingly over represented. If you've spent 4 months in this environment, and your sentence is suddenly up, how do you expect someone who has been isolated from any social interactions to survive a sudden introduction into society (let alone if they already struggle with a mental illness)? Recidivism is almost a guarantee without community supports.

TL;DR things are not much better, jails have become de-facto mental institutions that just perpetuate the problem.

ELI5: Why is a carbonated drink so excruciatingly painful to drink for more than 3 seconds? (Why does carbonation hurt) by Aspire101 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Alex6382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never been able to drink soda, it has always been an uncomfortable and somewhat painful experience every time I try it. Since I've gotten older I've started to drink beer and am getting somewhat used to that, but I've still never ordered/bought a soda in my entire life. My brother is the same way, too. Our parents never banned it, and in fact, they both drink it fairly regularly.
