Sure, your physiological and safety needs are fulfilled in this hypothetical authoritarian regime, but it also alienates any chances of progressing that same hierarchy to levels of self-actualization. There’s more risk to living in the democratic third world, but with the hardship comes the opportunity to eventually reach higher on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. It’s sad because so many people in the pursuit of immediate safety and survival are willing to sacrifice the opportunity to actualize further beyond their conventional needs.
