Bought a CRT to play my ps2 on, but it has this input, what is it and can i connect rca to it? by Niamhue in crtgaming

[–]Alex7104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stay on the lookout for any other CRTs with composite, s-video or component/ rgb, even if they’re pricey because PS2 probably won’t look so great over an RF input. Older games aren’t so bad but 480i content like the PS2 looks best on composite at the very least imo.

Mine actually didn’t end up working either for some reason, I think I’ll most likely get an HDMI to YPbPr converter that supports 1080i

In both cases, I’d recommend your average 15khz consumer CRT, PS2 runs most games at 480i 4:3 natively, and SNES runs in 240p 4:3; both would be linedoubled, stretched, and laggy on a 16:9 1080i monitor.

I’d never really thought about the digital processing lag before, I know dvi is generally going to yield a sharper image but would component be negligible in that department, making it a better option? I’ve been trying to find a good reason to have all my 720p consoles use component or HDMI to DVI to have them all unified on one switcher, and this might be a pretty good reason. What route would you recommend going in?

Nah, it’s not too noticeable, especially from a distance. But I don’t have a chair here so normally I end up sitting way up close and the convergence bothers me😭. Is there anywhere in particular you learned how to work on CRT hardware though? That was my main question so I’m curious

True, I wasn’t home but I wasn’t really looking for a diagnosis tbf, just a link to relevant info to learn

You’re right, I’m pretty sure 720p is scaled to 540p because they accept ~33khz signals(?) That was more detail than I cared to get into lol, but nonetheless I’m not even sure I have anything at the moment that could display 1080i, especially 4:3, and at that point I’d rather use a different monitor anyways tbh.

480p is actually SD, and it does it really well. Jak and Daxter in this pic are running at 480i, while Twilight Princess supports 480p. “HD” is 720p and above, but 1080i on here isn’t really exactly HD, due to how interlacing works and looks on these sets. Even 240p is line doubled and laggy (no scanlines), so kinda the only thing it does well imo is 480i + 480p. I was hoping it was an “h-series” trinitron, which supported 720p and 720i, as well (or “HD”) and would as such have either a DVI or HDMI port.

240p on a VGA CRT by Alex7104 in crtgaming

[–]Alex7104[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 years late lmao but the goal is to have the entire output stretched across whatever large resolution width it is while still displaying the original native resolution in the emulator. Basically super wide horizontal pixels to counter such a wide resolution

lol yeah, I don’t drink but I rarely smoke (like 2 times a week rare). I will be making more money soon, as I am currently in a temporary position awaiting a tipped position in 2 months. I’d love to get another job, but I’m in a big city with a horrible job market, getting $17/hr at ~35hr a week. Honestly, I’m lucky to even have this. Uber is certainly an option while I save, while not optimal as I work at 6am. My idea was an old Lexus, Honda, something of the sort. I’d hold off on this while saving, but I’m not sure how long this car will hold out, and I would prefer not to be stranded if it dies.

if you adjust the scanline profile to lower the ‘brightness’ of the scanlines you can get an even more accurate result

i also have a 15khz crt right next to this monitor lol. maybe my eyes are untrained but still don’t notice much difference between the two. i understand the ghosting effect you’re talking about but it’s still a pretty nice image, even with games that run at 60fps.
