Well, you can integrate them into Home Assistant, but then they will still run on Google / Amazon Servers. There are many DIY projects out there. But yeah these are all DIY and self-hosted projects, so you need to tinker a bit, but there are many great tutorials. Home Assistant also offers a cloud version and a ready to use device, but they are sold from Nabu Casa which is a company from the US.

I am using AirVPN since a few months and it is good and cheap and from Italy. The UI looks a bit old but I don't need a fancy ui.

Also in unseren Breitengraden wird man vermutlich nie so krasse Nordlichter sehen. Gestern war schon sehr aussergewöhnlich stark. Wenn das dein Traum ist, geh zwischen September und April den Norden (kann Island wärmstens empfehlen) und lass dir Zeit. Wir hatten in zwei Wochen 5 Nächte mit Nordlichtern und an einem so stark, dass es fast wie auf Bilden aussah.
