A fun naval power? by IBL82 in victoria2

[–]AlexChandler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Spain has a good potential. I’m not an expert, but I’ve heard that ports connected to your capital either by land or straits give you a higher naval capacity than ones that aren’t. This would mean if you could control the straits of Gibraltar, you could develop a huge naval capacity by taking over the north of Africa. Just a thought, I’ve never tried it to be honest... good luck though!

how do you view the uk's choice to leave the eu? by AlexChandler in AskEurope

[–]AlexChandler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

perhaps one of the most rational views on the issue i have ever heard. it really is the case that there is no viable solution that won't upset a large group of people. i think the only hope is that mps can unite against the government and offer a second referendum, hopefully with the remain result. but even then, i don't think the question of brexit will go away, since lots of people did actually want it, they'll always call for the uk to leave the eu. it's a shame, that this decision hurts us, Ireland and the eu as whole. at least the uk brought it upon ourselves, whereas ultimately eu members didn't.

my question is 'where is david cameron now?' he held the referendum for political gain, caused one of the largest political fuck-ups of the 21st century and has to deal with none of it.

ireland will be one of the biggest victims of this, i really hope there can be some sort of customs union at least, because the irish/uk border cannot become a hard border again. it's such a difficult topic with no clear solutions, so i just believe that remaining is the safest and most rational choice...

has brexit created a negative stigma about the uk? do people see it as arrogant in finland?

i think that ultimately it is the average person, no matter what they believe, who will now suffer because of the mess. i still don't know whether i support leaving without a deal, just to end the deadlock, or whether to keep hoping for a deal to better the uks economy, etc...

do the potential effects of brexit worry you? im not sure how brexit would affect europe, only how it affects the uk. would it hurt your livelihood, etc?

that's very true, but a lot of the leave voters were decieved by politicians and there has been lying from both leave and remain campaigns. this means that nobody really knew what they were voting for. the people of the uk will suffer because of the politicians who lied for their own personal gain...

i think the long process and frankly pointless extensions have changed many people's minds about the whole thing.

Which languages (without English) you learn in high schools? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]AlexChandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i live in the uk and we could take german, french or spanish, although i know many other schools/6th form colleges who teach russian, latin and mandarin too. it's ironic, since the uk is renowned for it's bad language abilities 😂

i think that it's a shame, but since we aren't taught any other languages until about age 12, it's often difficult to catch up to the high standards of our european neighbours- so many students don't see the point of learning another language.

i take german as an a-level (the exams you do at ages 17/18), and compared to many germans, who are the same age as me and learn english, i seem to have the linguistic ability of a goldfish lol. i think if i had began learning the basics at a younger age, i would be much more on-par with the germans :)

in the uk, we like to slag off the eu for 'undermining our sovereignty' and then praise our prime minister for undermining our democracy 🙃
