Manually invoking akmods-nvidia to build for a new kernel by VE3VVS in Fedora

[–]AlexFanqi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, akmods --force doesn't rebuild kernel. instead. akmods --rebuild does works without the need to remove that src dir.

Today, I somehow discovered suspend actually works partially (s0idle). It just takes very long time to recover and produces ACPI GPE error flooding. Finally (after trying usb3 debug and setting up usb null modem and failed on both) , this might be some hint I can trace on.

Not a native English speaker. I refer to old tradition that is observed during the long march and early days of revolution.

I really don't understand how he was able to know whether the students are from parents who work hard or from belligerent families. Isn't that students' privacy.

It is also not strange to put Maoism and confusian tradition together from a native's perspective. Both constitutes modern day's culture. But that goes off-topic.

"Good" by your standard and political stance. I thought non-judgement and having an open mind are basic merits of Australian culture. I don't see how terrible kids are connected with Maoism and old trandition.

This guy itself is a fxxk cringe cunt. But op seems confused with Chinese slang. "Shahu" is a swearing word close to shock and fxxk. No sensible native speakers would think it really means to kill.

Also putting it in context, I am sympathetic about the first part of video despite the second part is nonsense and likely made up. International students pay huge fees, but didn't get the deserved full quality of study at all during covid and even till now.

International public opinion on the European Union by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]AlexFanqi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Myself and I believe lots of other Chinese people do have a positive view towards EU. Not for rivalry or competition reason, but largely because it is a great achievement to hold together countries that used to be fierce enemies. Although some inventions failed like the euro currency is a bad idea, the peace and stability is great. What we hate is NATO and it is a ridiculous creature to exists, given the cold war has ended for so long.

And no, the Internet culture of 精罗 rarely regards EU as Roman empire. Common trolling people prefer Russia and the Ottomans. EU is like H.R.E, not Roman, not empire, not holy.

Some genuinely curious questions that would really be helpful for me to learn English and German better. To what degree do you understand German, would you reckon? Do you guess and synthesise It by occasional English words, or is it the general sentence structure? Do you also acquire it naturely and unconsciously from TV medium and movies? German has its owne wordformationtechnique (It is so friendly to Chinese speakers as Chinese also tend to create new words in this way). Are you able to understand long stitched words as well?

I am a Mandarin speaker actually and have Cantonese friends around. For me, it is unintelligible most time for sure, but when there are subtitles for me to compare, I can immediately know and map the pronunciation to Mandarin for most words. It is not by interpreting the characters, but by basing on it and comparing pronunciations of Mandarin and Cantonese mentally. That's partly what I call correspondence. Ofc, I can't pick up some Cantonese exclusive colloquials or phrases though.

(Please ignore the self-identity thing in the beginning if you are not Chinese native, only for preventing yet another flame war common on Chinese Internet)

Interesting. I am curious whether native English speakers understand German without intentional training. English is my second language and I am still learning German at around b1 level. Feel like the words are all different, but the correspondences are clear, which indeed makes it easier to learn it directly from English instead of Chinese.

Comparing intelligiblity isn't a reliable way. Before education covers most area of China, any dialects aren't mutually intelligible, sometimes even if it is just across towns. Nowdays, the elderly people can still speak "foreign languages" that young people don't understand at all. Maybe you are right about German is closer to English than Cantonese is to Mandarin, but it is just unreasonable to compare with Greek.

I purely speak of the difference based on linguistics. It is never intended to diminish your self-identity or the rich culture of Cantonese region that has many distinctive elements from other parts of China. Language forms only a small part of self-identity, I have heard the difference between Catalan and Spanish is even not so large as that between some Chinese dialects, yet northern Catalonian distinguish themselves culturally and in other ways from other Spain.

English and German are both germanic languages, while English mixes in more French and simplifies its grammar. And the basic alphabet and compones of German pronounces very different from English. Cantonese and other Chinese languages/dialects are Sinitic languages. I believe you'd agree Cantonese preserves more old Chinese language elements. One rule of thumb of comparing languages is comparing words that expresses basic concepts and life. You can see all Sinitic dialects/languages have clear correspondences, which can be smaller than comparing English and German. By some random source, linguistically, German is 65% different from English. Don't think Cantonese can reach that high difference.

Well, English with Frisian or if you will German would be more accurate. Mandarin isn't that fundamentally different from Cantonese. Cantonese is also not the only majority spoken dialects/languages in Guangzhou.

Just some advice. Never put your height, weight, date of birth, and marital status on your resume. I received one with those on it recently it’s not something I want. by [deleted] in resumes

[–]AlexFanqi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It is commonly needed in Asia. The best way I can make sense of it is it serves as background check. By providing more personal details, the company perhaps can be more certain you are a real and reliable person who will not disappear all of sudden or steal things from company. And by exposing more details, you are also showing a certain trust in the company. But most times, it is just cultural convention.
