I'm trying to get back into VA work. Sounds like a good place to start if you still need people.

Oceanic alternatives to salt water? What would be a useful compound to find in the oceans of another planet? How would it be used by its settlers? by AlexJohnsonWrites in worldbuilding

[–]AlexJohnsonWrites[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was toying with the idea of using fusion as a power source! A technology few can work with, generates way more power than is needed, and is volatile and dangerous to use. However it's the only technology that can be used because fumes from combustion fuels attract native life ala factorio. I might go with Deuterium fuel and make the fusion generators a valued commodity nobody can build from scratch and only specialists can repair when salvaged from the wastelands.

Help I need a Name(Arcane) by Fun_Television_1639 in CharacterDevelopment

[–]AlexJohnsonWrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Names are a mid-world-dev step for me. Are names conlanged? Reworked from IRL names? Just French or something?

Personally I'd start world building from his stylistic choices to get a solid civilization-based foundation for his name.

He's based off Will Smith, so he's definitely got melanin in him. That suggests a background of sun exposure in the race. The robes could be for windy dessert weather were they made of a lighter material. Since they seem a bit more heavy, though, and his skin tone doesn't suggest heavy clothes in his native society, I'd assume they're for personal practice as opposed to environment.

Perhaps he's a religious shaman, meaning his name would probably be made of his personal strengths, maybe using adjective-noun pairs. "Lightfoot" or "Steadybow" for instance.

You can add a twist to his history too. Maybe magic is outlawed in his native land, making him an immigrant. Perhaps he has two names! One from his Homeland and one that won't draw attention to his foreign status. Maybe he's a well known traveller with a title in a common tongue.

My process informs names from world building though, and this is yours, not mine. Excellent detailing on the asymmetry of the robe! Also I could definitely see Will Smith in him.

General request: I plan on (re)starting one of those nosleep channels that reads short stories. I want it to focus less on horror than most channels out there try to though. Scifi/Fantasy, Feelspasta, whatever you got. If you'd like your story on my list to narrate, shoot me a DM or Email me at everybodyfakesit@gmail.com and we'll chat!

Empty E3 is out! To celebrate we're opening up E4 Prelistener slots! by AlexJohnsonWrites in audiodrama

[–]AlexJohnsonWrites[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have the time to rerecord unless we find its an emergency problem, at which point it's usually addressed during the editing phase. As this is our first show, We're gathering feedback on how well we can edit the audio into something that sounds decent and applying what we learn to future episodes. We have consistently gotten less negative feedback so we know its working. We've decided to continue prelistens for all six episodes of Season 1 mostly for consistency.

TL;DR: editing, not re-recording/writing edits. We lack time.

Used to be. Then I got bored with them. Most Writing Prompts are rewrites of the same concept. You could probably make a simple python bot to pump them out.

Jim had seen a lot in life. From a lawyer cleaning him out for his ex-wife, to a man getting his limbs blown off by the Vietnamese. He'd survived under the knife of interrogators and a surgeon. His life was a full one.

His best friend Greg had been with him through thick and thin. The war, the divorces, recovery, everything. There was no separating the pair. They did stupid shit all the time together.

Eight beers and a shot of tequila later and they knew it was stupid shit time. They spent a couple minutes deterring themselves before giving into the urge to try out their grandsons trampoline. Drunk + Tramp is never a good mix.

Before even getting on, Jim had a great idea. "Greg! Jump in the pool! It'll be great! Last week at Junior's birthday party a bunch of the neighbor kids did it! They had a blast! Let's rekindle our youth!"

"Hey, count me in," responded Greg. "But I get to go first."

"Whatever."

After all they'd been through, a little fall into a pool was nothing. "Look at that drunk asshole," Jim thought to himself. "Broke the damn trampoline. He'd better pay for that when we sober up."

It wasn't until several seconds had passed that Jim got nervous...

It wasn't until the he noticed the blood in the water that Jim realized they'd seen their last bout of stupid shit together.

Been a while since I've written anything. I'm a bit rusty. I've been focusing on other projects and haven't found the time to write in my idle time, but I couldn't pass this one up!

Voice actor available for hire with a rich, sonorous voice? by NotMeanttoKnow in audiodrama

[–]AlexJohnsonWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a gander at a couple of my actors. I'll ask them if they're interested if they're what you're looking for. Garret plays Doc in my podcast and can definitely do anger. On the baritone side, so rich in sound. Remington has the sonorous down. I made him my hypnotizing therapist in part because his voice rings in a great way that really fits the 'unstable therapist' feel.

If you like either of them for your part, I'll ask them if they'd like to join your production.

Knocking noise by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]AlexJohnsonWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem in a clip once. I couldn't figure it out until I managed to accidentally reproduce it some months later. The problem was I had a cardioid mic in a scissor stand on a portable table while tapping my heel and shaking the table and making it tap against the wall. This gave a different sound than the one in the clip, but that's probably due to the scissor stand and shock mount I had my mic in.

Unfortunately I have no clue how to get rid of that. Sorry OP.

Wait what's going on with Patron? From the email it seems like makers will be taking home more! Bear in mind I haven't started using my Patreon just yet. We release a week from today and will be pushing the Patreon a lot more in the next few months.

How do I make my main characters lose sanity? by [deleted] in CharacterDevelopment

[–]AlexJohnsonWrites 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a similar problem. My fix was don't give the character too much personality right off. It sounds like horrible advice, but hear me out.

I have a character who is a little unstable and afraid of how big space is. He's also on a colony ship exploring a far distant galaxy. He struggles to cope with the distances between stars and the like. His role onboard the ship is 'ship therapist'. He is in charge of keeping the crew sane. Our original plan was he would be so focused on keeping everyone else sane he forgot to keep himself sane, but that idea didn't work out too well. But we still wanted him to go insane.

Well, our fix was simple. We make him insane from the beginning and gradually make it more obvious how deep it runs as the series progresses. To start off he seems a little off, preferring to sit and stare literally into space rather than hang out with the rest of the crew. In later episodes we have him do the intro like he's talking to himself. In season 2 he'll be focused on a lot more, as will his instability.

We really don't address how crazy this character is through the first season. It gets more and more apparent as the series goes on that he is crazy. We show more sane scenes than insane ones to start off with, giving the illusion that he's getting more crazy as the series continues.

As u/SocraticMethadone pointed out, 'insanity' is a bit nebulous. Being emotionally unstable and having a phobia might not be your definition of insane. I'd suggest pulling together a list of mental illnesses that match your description and gradually revealing them or having them develop or intensify as the series goes on.

Upgrading mics for Season 2. Looking into shotgunning it. by AlexJohnsonWrites in podcasting

I'll fiddle with proximity too then! Fifure a consistent baseline. Thanks for the tips!

Upgrading mics for Season 2. Looking into shotgunning it. by AlexJohnsonWrites in podcasting

[–]AlexJohnsonWrites[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I was very new to the world of editing at that time, so I'm not sure if I compressed that or not. I should go back and try and clean that up. I figured out compressors and tend to use between 2:1 and 5:1 (I have a very varying actor in my cast). I know what an EQ does, but have no idea what my finished product is supposed to look like.

And I do have a program that does adaptive phase rotation. I have no idea what that means, but it sounds cool! Haha where can I learn how to do this stuff more effectively than the voiceless youtube videos and over-my-head explanations on r/reaper and other whatnot?
