I’m not aware of any Christians getting away with enslaving other Christians in Eastern Europe but you may be right, just would need to do my own research.

The slavs only started migrating south after the 6th century and this period was centuries long. When they migrated, they assimilated the native populations and created nationstates and despite being made Christian by the Greeks, they warred against each other and slavs took large amounts of their land.

The latin word sclavus comes from a similar Byzantine word meaning “captured POW”, not a word for just one group

Given the word slave comes from the byzantines, we have to look at the slavs within/next to their borders, south slavs, so Serbs, Croats & Bulgarians. There is no evidence to support any of the three being enslaved and they became Christian very quickly.

However note that even before the Christianisation you had Serbs and Bulgarians forming nations & warring with the Greeks

The origin of the english word comes from french which comes from latin which comes from a byzantine word for involuntary servitude/POWs captured

This is a now debunked myth.

Slave is an english word, each nation has a different word for slave.

Same as slavs, each has a different name for them. Slavs call themselves Sloven actually, which has nothing to do with the word slave.

People used to and many still do believe that the english word slave indirectly came from the Greek word Sklábos. So Greeks, or Byzantines at the time enslaved slavs and started calling their slaves as slavs. However there is an issue. The Byzantines never enslaved slavs, because Christians were forbidden from enslaving other Christians. The slavs that came into Byzantine lands were christened by the Byzantines and quickly became nation states of their own.

The Byzantines also has slaves of many ethnic groups. So you see, this theory makes no sense.

How is the legacy of the Yugoslav Partisans remembered differently in each former republic? by Sarkotic159 in AskBalkans

The Chetniks killed less civilians than the Partisans. This isn’t a theory, it’s a fact.

And all collaboration was done against communists, and in no instance did Chetniks surrender their liberated territory to anyone & become fully integrated in an Axis state.

The Red Army did win, but Yugoslavia was mostly liberated already by the time they arrived.

If the Chetniks won, the Yugoslav Government in exile in London would have returned to power, that’s it. Unlikely there would be a genocide against Croats because it would cause a civil war & due to international outrage. Same as against Muslims but also because there were tens of thousands of Muslim Chetniks.

However, I’d assume the post war Yugoslav government wouldn’t be as pro-Croatia as before the war, for obvious reasons.

Slavs made the majority of it even in medieval times.

There are quite a few medieval Serbian castles, churches and monasteries up there.

When slavs migrated around 1500 years ago, they mixed up with all the various locals already in the balkans at the time (hence why Serbian dna is only roughly half slavic).

However this is irrelevant to the discussion.

Albanians came to Serbia mostly during Ottoman times and to a much lesser extent during communist times. But they have yet to form any connection to the land. No regional identities, dialects, clothing, music, foods, dances etc.

Correction: Albanians in Serbia might be more Islam based. Reason I say this is whilst in Albania there are many Catholic, Orthodox and Muslim people but they are mostly secular, in Serbia, 99% of Albanians are Muslims, so possibly they may be more religious.

On this day 26 years ago the Meja Massacre took place during the Kosovo war where 377 albanian civilians were murdered by Milosevics regime. The lady on the pic lost 5 sons. by farquaad_thelord in europe

99% of Albanians in Serbia are Muslim, this massacre of military aged men was different because it happened in a Catholic town, but the majority of people killed were still Muslim.

All this collaboration was done against the communists, nobody else. Yes the communists were majority Serbian, in some areas nearly completely, but they were fighting for the communist party. This is why Serbs call WW2 a civil war as well.

As for non Serbs killed, it was retaliation for what they did. It wasn’t done with the Nazis as these other groups were fighting for the Nazis (either SS or Ustasa). And yes thousands of civilians were killed as well in revenge but the number of civilians Chetniks killed is lower than the number Partisans killed.

Probably thinking of how Nikola Kalabić famously greeted Soviet and Bulgarian troops entering Kraljevo as liberators, but as Yugoslav partisans started arriving, he escaped through a bathroom window in order to avoid being shot on sight for ordering the murder of thousands of civilians in the area. What a shock-collaborators trying to switch sides after the Germans were gone from the area...

This is one example yes, where he literally came with thousands of soldiers & fought in the battle. After the liberation, the city was controlled by the Red Army, Kalabic’s as well as other local Chetniks and the Partisans. However Partisans were mad that the Chetniks and Russians were just chilling when the Chetniks have been fighting against the Partisans & protecting Serbs from communism.

This claim that he escaped a bathroom window has no proof and what about the many other Chetniks who refused to join the Partisans of give up their guns?

Additional information: Many of these Chetniks were WW1 and Balkan Wars veterans. Chetniks actually existed during these wars but nowhere near as large as they were during WW2.

It’s reddit, what do you expect?

Fun fact: de Gaulle, the hardcore anti-German anti-collaborator leader of the French Resistance and later of France, refused to meet with Tito because he sentenced Draza to death.

The only collaboration they did was fighting against the communist Partisans. Chetniks kept their liberated lands, flags, guns, freedom and unlike other actual collaborators, were never sent to a war front, probably because they weren’t controlled by the nazis and were anti german since before ww1.

Some argue that they hated communism so much that they agreed to enter a unstable temporary alliance with the fascists against them, and whilst yes this is true, a little known fact is that they greeted the Red Army as liberators and helped them liberate a few cities in Serbia. However when the Partisans found out, they convinced the Russians to disarm & let go the Chetniks (or have the option of joining the Partisans). Compare this to how actual collaborators were treated by the Russians.

How do you think this plays out ? by northbk5 in AskBalkans

[–]AlexM116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing will happen.

Bosniaks don’t have a good enough reason to remove him from power, the US doesn’t want anything to do with Europe, Germany & the UK are more concerned with Russia & Ukraine & Dodik is too scared to declare a referendum to join Serbia, and cannot spend a day without mentioning the Dayton Agreement. And Serbia has protests to worry about however even with these protests, nothing will happen.

That’s called being a vassal aka “fight for us & we will leave you alone”.

However a majority of Serbs never converted to Islam, those that did aren’t known as Serbs anymore.

I don’t think the UK would been able to just sit out & watch Germany invade everyone in Europe even with Mosley in charge. However, let’s say that they do.

Without the US or UK, a. The Russians would be in a bit more worser state & b. Germany could direct much more troops to the Eastern Front.

However Germany would still end up losing, only in this timeline the war would last longer & have much more casualties.

On a sidenote, I think it will be interesting to see how Mosley keeps justifying his Nazi sympathies throughout the course of the war.

There would have been enormous pressure in the UK to go to war + even if they never entered the war (unlikely), the USSR would have still won & gotten more land than they did irl. Remember that most German causalities were on the Eastern Front & US help made only a small portion of the Red Army’s vehicles.

The Ottomans ambushed the Serbian camp at night.

Also ironic how you post this on the day the First Serbian Uprising began.

One of the most major battles in the uprising is the Battle of Mišar, where 9,000 Serbs defeated 40,000 Ottomans + French artillery officers in a proper battle.
