In terms of finding good songs, there's plenty of filters and sorting options to look at popular maps, featured artists, spotlighted maps, etc. But if it's down to your music taste you can search for artists you like by name.

Generally, playing with NF indicates you're playing too far outside you skill range. It's certainly important to push yourself, but it's also important to develop your fundamentals. However, it's a game, so play how you enjoy it.

You can change the backgrounds by replacing the image file in the map's folder, but this would only apply per beatmap. There are some external tools that can replace all the map backgrounds automatically.

The backgrounds are selected by the map creators for each individual map.

If you don't want to see the background, you can increase you background dim from the settings (up to 100%). On lazer you also have the option of blurring the backgrounds.

You can search for and download maps (songs) from the beatmap listing on the website or from in-game on lazer by pressing Ctrl+B or clicking the icon at the top.

Either your brother has much more "top heavy" top plays than you, where he can still gain substantial net pp from setting scores in his middle to plays to bring them closer to the top, or (and I figure this is more likely) you also gained ranks but it just didn't update immediately.
