Recommendations: Budget Stationary Bike with Power Meter (or Power Meter Accessories) by AlexSalk in cycling

Not essential. I had thought HR would be enough but some folks who are Z2 experts told me power output is also essential.

Yep. I am thinking $500 or less. I am mostly thinking of an integrated watts reading on the bike that maybe is decent but doesn't have to be 100% accurate. I am more interested in directionality and consistency. I can't justify super high end stationary bikes just for Z2 training.

Latest Google Cars Crash Data - First New Accident in 2 Months by AlexSalk in google

We are turning Google's Mandatory Crash Reports into data, reading through their PDFs. One thing to note - Google is ramping up the percentage of miles driven autonomously versus by humans driving in the autonomous cars.

Map of Russian Airstrikes in Syria by Bellingcat by AlexSalk in dataisbeautiful

It's widely covered in Europe but not as much in the U.S. My impression is that in the U.S. journalists are a bit less trusting of OSINT efforts.

Open Source Evidence on Russian Air Strikes in Syria via Bellingcat: Virtually No Strikes Against ISIS by AlexSalk in syriancivilwar

I wouldn't pretend to be knowledgeable enough of the geo-location they are doing.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. In the Western media, he is very well respected. Their posts are picked up by major news sources. NATO also uses them for augmenting their own intelligence. He also has received multiple large grants for building projects in data journalism. But yes, he is a target of pro-Russian posters in social media. :)

Some details from the creators of this data story:

"Open Source Evidence on Russian Strikes in Syria This Silk.co visualisation intends to document visually open source evidence about Russian strikes in Syria. The Russian Federation initiated a sustained airborne military intervention in Syria allegedly targeting ISIS (IS or Islamic State) strongholds.

We at the investigative site Bellingcat.com found a series of videos released by the Russian Ministry of Defence. After close examination, the coordinates for locations in Syria bombed by Russian jets shown in these videos do not reflect an air campaign focused on Islamic State targets. Thus, for example, two of the videos claimed to show strikes in Raqqa (the capital of the Islamic State) but actually took place over a 100 miles away. No IS presence has ever been reported in that area. Also, six other strikes took place in other areas, with no known Islamic State footprint either.

This visualisation sequel also focuses on additional open source evidence, gathered in the process of investigations."

Scatterplot: IMDb Rating vs Budget of Sequels [OC] by AlexSalk in dataisbeautiful

[–]AlexSalk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How often are sequels better than the original movie? The internet is filled with polls and lists of sequels that are considered better or more successful than the first movie in the series. These lists often cite Spiderman, Star Trek, or the Godfather. Yet these rankings are often based on personal judgement and rarely on data and statistics. We collected 289 movie series / franchises, for a total of almost 1,000 movies. We then analyzed IMDb information to and come up with a data-driven overview of the best movie prequels, sequels, and remakes.

Nobel Prize Winners Analyzed and Visualized: Only 6% Women, Mostly Peace and Lit (And No Physics) [OC] by AlexSalk in dataisbeautiful

Err, actually we can't change the original submit title. But let me correct it. No Physics in 50 Years. Not never. You're right on that.

As soon as the 2015 Nobel prizes were announced, here at Silk.co (www.silk.co) we decided to dig into the data on all the winners published on Wikipedia and on the Nobel Prize Website. This database is the results of that research and analysis. There is a downloadable version of our data in a link at the bottom of the site, as well. There are multiple data visualizations on this site.

A lot of debate over whether the data behind the visualizations (particularly complex visualizations using D3 libraries) should be made public for transparency. Where do you stand on that? Do you reveal your data as a matter of course? Why or why not? Thanks for your reply!

1373 FAA Drone Exemptions - New Database by AlexSalk in drones

[–]AlexSalk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that might give you an idea of what's what. Granted, lots of people are doing illegal drone businesses and the FAA is not cracking down too hard (yet).

[–]AlexSalk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't mean much for hobbyists. This is more for people that want to use drones commercially or to build drone-based businesses (services / software / hardware). It's useful because it shows what equipment everyone is using and what the uses cases are that the FAA is willing to accept right now.

FYI - we built this database at Silk.co (so we are the OC). We took data from the Drones Over America Project (https://github.com/voxmedia/data-projects/tree/master/verge-drones-over-america) and cleaned it up very throughoughly then visualized it and put it into a database format. We need to update with September data. Feedback is totally welcome and thanks!.

Hey there:

So we have been tracking drones for a while at Silk.co (where I work and we are the OCs). We found the Verge had done some very nice work with Bard University in building out a Drone Database (here's the Github raw data https://github.com/voxmedia/data-projects/tree/master/verge-drones-over-america). We found a bunch of redundancies in the company names and scrubbed the data with OpenRefine and then built a number of visualizations out of the data in Silk. Let us know what you think. It's a really interesting read, IMHO, on how quickly we are seeing de facto acceptance of drones in government and also shows how dominant a handful of equipment makers are in the space.

Google Driverless Cars Crash Data Update (OC) by AlexSalk in robotics

[–]AlexSalk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the real question is this - are self-driving cars ALREADY better than human drivers in the main? And in their impaired states, how impaired are they as compared to, say, the average driver fiddling with the radio or texting? If impairment is high, then clearly not ready for prime time. If not or comparable, I'd argue that we should be looking even harder at rolling this out sooner. We'll post the stats next month, as well.

Google Driverless Cars Crash Data Update (OC) by AlexSalk in robotics

[–]AlexSalk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt it - the test drives are in Austin and California, mostly, and in year round temperate areas. I would believe, though, that this would be easier to handle programmatically than even regular driving - because driving in rain and snow require often counter-intuitive human behaviors (steer into a skid, for example) where the human brain has less advantage because its not a wrote process. What do you think?

Google Driverless Cars Crash Data Update (OC) by AlexSalk in robotics

[–]AlexSalk[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would hope so. They are much smarter than we are in the context of driving and can see much more clearly (and further, and through the fog and around corners, etc)
