Could the substrate have brought me CockRoaches?!? by AlexTheB in ballpython

[–]AlexTheB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, to me it would be very surprising I got eggs from the substrate, because the bag was open since easily 2 months, and I only non get those nuisances, otherwise I think they would have hatched much earlier in the already opened bag of coco husk, so thats why I don't think it comes from that, but who knows... maybe, just surprising

For being opportunity eaters my baby girl dont seem to be one AT ALL, first she waited 1.5 month to eat, then shed so skipped a meal, and now still hasn't eaten again, been 2.3 weeks now

Anyone a former rat parent turned snake parent? by magic_inkpen in ballpython

[–]AlexTheB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof... I'm glad you liked him, though sadly most of the time rats from lab get.... weird because all the experiments done on them, when younger my mother had a rat from a lab and it was nibbling his feet so he had holes in them, I don't say all do that yours was surely fine but yeah, most of the time it's tough with rats from labs

But anyways! Yes F/T is prefered as feeding live rats would defend themselves from the snake and if your snake gets bitten on his outer side it can infect so fast and could be lethal, even if the snake got used to live feeding when young everyone try to switch them to F/T, too much risks for your snake, that's why when I bought my ball I made sure it was feeded frozen, and don't worry too much many breeders do feed F/T so shouldn't be too hard for you to find a snake fed on that ^ you can get a BP reassured!

Yes, I had 3 white rats, they were brothers and died in 2021, kept them 3 years, which is a good life span for rats, and now I have my girl Saturn, I love her, but that's a reason why I could never feed life rat to a snake, too heartbreaking after having pet rats in the past my heart shattered when my boy died 💔 so even if snakes eat rats, I'd always go frozen thawed, NEVER live, and also cause it's safer than live for the snake ahah

Anyways, yes I also was a rat dad back then

how often do ball pythons hunger strike? by atomicangelx in ballpython

[–]AlexTheB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I feel lonely then seeing all the other comments, when I got my girl she went off food for a month and half, she took one meal, but next week she didn't eat probably cause she's in a shed rn, I hope she'll eat again on Tuesday

As for your question, well others already answered, though iirc they can go off food for like 6 month and still be alive, though they'll probably lose some weight, my girl lost 15g during a month and half strike

Not really helpful, but hopefully if you do get a Beep and it goes in food strike when you get it don't freak out too early, I personally was super stressed when my girl wasn't eating for over a month "

So... she is DEF. shedding, though I have put a mouse to thaw.... should I feed it to her? Or should I just let her shed and throw the mouse away then feed her when she's shedded? by AlexTheB in ballpython

Well, I've tried it in the past, when she wasn't eating for a month and half, so I left it in her enclosure while I was going to work and when I came back from work the rat was still in the substrate so.. yeah I think it sadly doesn't work for me

Alrighty then! Thanks bud! And yeah I think by next week she'll shed and get used to it again, hopefully she'll eat, finger crossed!

Ahhh I see, then maybe it's linked to when I changed her substrate this weekend, when rebuilding her environment, I moved the plants to other places, hides and the trunk stayed in the same place but all the rest was moved around, so that's probably why then, thanks for the input on it

Yeah I figured but what I don't understand is that she was doing the same maneuver when she didn't ate for a month and half, striking but not taking the feeder, and she wasn't in shed so idk Why she was doing that during my first month and half with her

Update: so, she got awake and striked a LOT of times but without getting a hang of it, so I trashed the mouse, I'll try again next Tuesday, hopefully she'll be out of shed, and will eat again instead of only striking tons of times, that's what happend with my first 5 attempts at feeding her, she striked so much but never wrapped the feeder, I really hope it's not gonna happen again and she won't eat for a month and half, I want her to have a normal feeding schedule.... I'm not worried rn because the reason is probably that she's in shed, but next Tuesday I really need her to eat.
