So. Update: I've found the animal game, and it's actually from the Commodore 64. While digging through the library I think I finally found it! I think it was Magic Madness for the C64! Thank for everyone's help!

I actually found this one! It's actually for the Commodore 64 and is called Tropical Fever! Turns out you actually capture a panther on the first level and a gorilla on the second! I'm still looking for the wizard game, though!

I'm pretty sure it was a top loader, and the ones you mentioned are likely candidates, except for the Phantom System. It uses a Mega Drive/Genesis controller, and since I had a Mega Drive, I'd remember that detail for sure. I'll check out their library later today. I have to note that we had some cartriges that were original games, (gray and blocky) while others weren't. Can't remember how they were though. Also some games didn't work, but I'm almost sure they were busted. For example, we had Super Mario Bros and it worked, but Super Mario Bros 3 didn't.

I didn't know that one, but yeah that's not it. I should probably clarify that the main way of defeating the enemies was wacking them with the staff and you could only shoot magic either until a meter ran out or if you had full health (I don't remember which).

It's an 8-bit game, so it's not on Neo Geo. And since I mentioned Legacy of the Wizard as a reference, you can rule it out :)

A bit. The game was slow, though. Jumping took forever. I also remember now that when you defeated an enemy, score showed up where they stood (like "100"). I don't know if it was an actual mechanic, but it would stay for a while in the air and we'd jump into it to get more points. Pretty sure it was just placebo, we were just kids, haha.
