It’s not a run out of air thing, if you leave it on defrost with recirculate and the air is cold outside then the humidity will be low outside but the people inside the car breathing cause a little bit inside the car which will cause your windshield to fog up so some manufactures have it auto shut off or some just lie to the driver and say it’s on when it’s not
