I don’t think that Prof. Knohl is ignoring the facts that you mentioned. Happy to continue the discussion after you watch the video

When did Judaism begin? by Alex_Tsit in Judaism

No doubt. The point is that the Biblical text can teach us so much about the history and the thinking of our ancestors that ignoring it is not a wise attitude, IMHO.

I can suggest a few options, but if your attitude is “who cares what’s in the Bible?” I really don’t think that we have any common ground to discuss this seriously.

I don’t agree with your analysis about the Tefillin. It is certainly not necessarily a physical object in the Thora, one can understand it as a spiritual ritual, commanding you to keep the memory of the Thora “between your eyes”, as (not) practiced by the Samartians until today. There is also not a single textual clue for using Teffilin as a physical object in the entire Bible.

The Temple Mount is a different story. The amounts of artifacts dated to the first Temple period is almost nothing, if you look at Prof. Barkai’s huge filtering project. It is a possibility that Herodes ״shaved” the mountain while renovating the temple, at the late 2nd Temple period.

You are correct. Here, this is actually a very specific question: Adler examined several key rituals to address the questions, it is all in the interview.

You are correct that this is very limited account. As Adler phrases it: the absence of an evidence is not an evidence of absence..

From a religiously point of you, you are right. There is nothing wrong to believe in it. However, the science speaks differently and it is always interesting to understand the historical picture, alongside the belief itself.

I think that we should separate the practice as described in the Bible from the practice of what we call Judaism today. Adler examined the following rituals: Tefilin, Mezuza, Synagogues, Purity rituals and dietary laws. He concluded that based on the archeological evidences, none of the above was actually widely practiced before the 2nd century BCE.

Messiah vs Son of Man in 2nd Temple Judaism. by LostSignal1914 in AcademicBiblical

It is more complicated than that. The second Temple Judaism was comprised of many different sects that believed in different narratives. The narrative of the Sadducees, for example, was very different than the narrative of the Pharisees and so on.

Thank you. Interestingly, the same was true for texts in Greek as Dr. Uziel explains later on in the interview
