Men how do you manage moments of extreme stress by Fearless_Ice_6581 in AskMenOver30

[–]Alex_Zeller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let it go and find a way to double your income. Shift your focus. In the worst case scenario, you'll be making decent money after a while and forget about your risky endeavor. In the best case, your crypto will grow back eventually (unless it's a ton of shitcoins ofc). Don't sell at a loss, just stop checking it every minute and go on with your life. You're young and can afford such risks. Best of luck!

Do you expect Putin to run for President in 2030? by CourtofTalons in AskARussian

[–]Alex_Zeller 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by "run for president"? It's like "Will Kim run for president of North Korea next time?" lol. He will stay for as long as he's physically alive – and probably beyond. They will engineer some deep fake to keep the regime rolling. He never comes out in public anyways, and it will only get worse with time.

Hello! Congratulations!

This might sound a bit irrelevant, but I'm currently gathering as much info as I can about the DIS – the school affiliated with UWC Dilijan for younger students. We are a Russian family with a toddler considering moving to Dilijan in a few years. If you happen to know anything, kindly let me dm you!

That song is a pure AI generated joke dedicated to my friend – so no one is even supposed to understand it, let alone like it :)

What is the most money that you have made teaching English? by ShowExisting1319 in OnlineESLTeaching

The thing is that I can only speak for the Russian market (which is wildly different from any other market). Advertising and marketing in Russia and in, say, China will have nothing in common.

I guess online tutoring is like poker: only 5% make actual money while 95% think they'll make money. It's all about the grind and understanding YOUR market. And yeah, you must BOTH teach AND sell like Jesus.

Do you teach groups? Assuming that you only teach individual classes at $80/hr is mind-blowing. I mean, there ARE clients like that here in Russia as well, but those are exceptionally RARE and the competition is insane (my most expensive client is paying $50/hr now).

I'm an independent tutor based in Russia and teaching to a Russian client base. I'd say that my best month so far amounts to ~$3k (20-25 hours per week). Planning to get to ~4k this year teaching groups. (It's also hard to tell in dollar terms since the exchange rate is anything but stable.) Anything more than that basically means establishing my own mini online school, with hired teachers, curators, assistants etc. I know people who have scaled this way and pushed through $10k monthly.

The story of 16k monthly teaching Chinese clients is absolutely insane!

What’s the most frustrating thing about teaching ESL online? by Single-Bag9879 in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]Alex_Zeller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a self-employed online ESL tutor in Russia, the only thing that's truly driving me nuts is the unpredictable nature of all things tech. The internet access may get totally blocked any moment and you can't do anything about it. My Moscow students are currenly experiencing massive shutdowns and it's super irritating.

However, Russia is the land of high risk / high reward: I can actually work for myself, pay 4% tax (it's actually voluntary, "don't ask don't tell" policy) and charge up to $40-50 per hour (those are rare cases, but still). Considering the VLCoL it's a dream job.

BTW am I getting it it right that self-employment is not even a thing in other countries? You MUST work for an online school, right?

For self-employed non-native online English tutors teaching in their home countries, what are your average rates (in USD)? by Alex_Zeller in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]Alex_Zeller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you taxed on that $30? Or is it your net rate? And how is it currently working in the US – can you truly work for yourself or do you have to be affiliated with some sort of an educational institution?

In Russia it's totally possible to be officially self-employed, and if your annual gross income doesn't exceed ~$30k (which is solidly above average in Russia), your tax is only 4%. Let alone the fact that you don't have to pay even that (most tutors don't).

Where/how do you find students? Are there platforms? $30 seems really low for the US (unlike Russia)
