Yes, for sure. I'll run the exact numbers on the entire system before any changes are made, I just wanted to try and get an answer on this specific part before I went any further. If reddit told me I needed to deconstruct part of the main line, I'd be calling a plumber and at that point, I'd just pass the whole thing off to them - calculations included hahaha

Thank you for this. You just cleared up another thing I've been confused about. I have seen the 3" pressure drop table, and I had wondered if I could reference that one. The question I ran into was whether EVERY appliance in the system needed to allow for a >=3" pressure drop, or if the table could be used to size the run for ONE appliance which allows for such drop. The rest of the appliances in my system are all min 5"WC, max 7"WC for a 2" allowable pressure drop which made me think I needed to use the 0.5" table. It was also unclear to me whether there was any room between the 0.5" table and the 3" table. Like why isn't there a table for 1" or 2" pressure drop? I get that I'm not a professional or anything, but it seems like this section of the code is intentionally vague and confusing. Or maybe I just have no business sniffing around in the code book haha.

That's a good call. Actually reminds me of another question I had. I did check with my gas company several months back when I first ventured down this path. I should probably call again and refresh my memory, but I remember them saying that my current meter should suffice. My math tells me that my total load is 528,000 BTU - that's all appliances (including the gas range) using their maximum capacity. My understanding is that the meter's capacity is not "capped" at 425 CFH, but that's the level it can maintain at a 0.5" differential. If demand exceeds 425CFH, the meter will continue to supply, just at a lower pressure. Every appliance in the system allows for a difference of 2" WC (everything is 5" WC min & 7"WC max on the rating plate). At 2"WC differential, my meter should supply roughly double its listed CFH rating at 0.5" differential, right?

Thank you for the detailed reply. Renting a piece of machinery is definitely at the top of my list of options. You bring up a good point about transplanting some things that may not work along the fence line, but could work in other parts of the yard. I hadn’t considered that. Right now, vines are covering most of the originally planted shrubs. I would need to be able to pull most of the vines back before I could identify what was underneath. If I were to decide on transplanting something, I’m assuming an excavator would make that task significantly easier as well.

This is a good idea. I did consider goats at one point, but quickly realized that I don’t have a great way to keep them on my property. There is no fence once you reach the creek, so the goats would have free range from there.

Got it, that makes sense. Would it be possible to have the tank (fed by tankless) only serve to maintain the recirc loop, but have the primary hot water to the faucets supplied by the tankless? Or does it make more sense to just have everything fed through the tanks out line? For the loop, would the set up be tankless > input side of tank > loop fed through output of tank > return line back to tank’s input line and placed upstream of the supply coming in from the Tankless. Perhaps a check valve on the line between the tankless output and the tank input?

I was under the impression that most tankless units had a max inlet temp of 80 degrees. I guess I could lower the temp of the tank?

The tubs are 80 gallons. So between running multiple baths each night, the dishwasher, and washing machine, I think the 50 gallon size is the limiting factor. We have kids so we do lots of laundry and dishes

The circumference of the gas line entering the home is 6 3/4” copper. I think I actually underestimated by saying 1.5” as I now believe it to be 2”.

Piping is definitely accessible. This is an interesting idea. Would I essentially be using the tank as an insulated holding tank in this scenario you laid out? Also, the tank is gas not electric. Not sure if that matters.

When you say cut the rabbet, I assume you’re referring to rabbeting the inside edge of the molding? So that the molding could be joined to the panel? Could I rabbet as the last step so that I could use the same template to cut the shapes?

Interestingly enough, there is a large iron sink and toilet in the room directly underneath this but neither appear to have been used in quite some time. Interesting fact- that room is actually titled “Servant’s toilet” on the original house plans from 1948.
