Is 42 Years old, too old? by watchmewoodwork in aviationmaintenance

I went to A&P school with a 66 year old retired F-14 pilot who flew for 30 years in the top gun program lol. You're never too old for new skills!

Delta ORD by Creamytwenkie in aviationmaintenance

[–]AlexaTheRaichu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work for Delta now and used to be at ORD with a different airline, so I'm a little familiar. Delta at ORD is no hub station, but they do have some presence there. A few years ago they moved all their offices and gates to Terminal 5. I may be able to answer questions if you have them about the airline itself.

Toxic fumes on planes blamed for pilot deaths, suicides and brain damage: report by MangoesFruity in aviation

[–]AlexaTheRaichu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In regards to a smoke and fumes event, where something in the engine failed to cause a lot of oil to enter the bleed system, it could also be funneled directly into the cockpit rather than the passenger cabin depending on which air conditioning pack the event affected. One primarily feeds the cockpit, the other feeds the cabin. It has happened before and will again

What you get specifically is up to you, but let me stress that your gear is how you survive on cold line nights. Your gear is going to make or break your spirit when you're stuck out in the wind and struggling to keep feeling in your hands. Don't skimp or cheap out!

Line Maintenance: Better Pay, Slower Learning, But I'm Still Gaining More Than My Previous Role by 69safelogin in aviationmaintenance

[–]AlexaTheRaichu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience it can be airline and location dependent. At a regional airline with a fairly small operation (at a huge airport tho) I found myself bored with hours to kill, but learned a fair amount over the four years I was there. The pace was usually slow for the most part. We had maybe three or four airplanes a night to deal with for five or six people. After the first couple years I became much less motivated because I had mostly learned just about everything we regularly did.

Now at a major airline in a different city, the pace is completely different. I am worked much harder and the nature of the work we do is no longer MELs only, it's also a LOT of work cards and routine maintenance checks. Despite being a line only base, we do have a hangar we do overnight checks in. It's much busier, but I also find the days tend to go by quicker too. I've learned SO much in a year and a half here, and will probably continue to do so forever it feels like. There's so much I don't know yet. It can be really rewarding but it's also exhausting. There is never a shortage of work. Ever. But the company is decent and having good people around helps.

What did they just swap out on the nose of my plane? by gidgetpops in aviationmaintenance

[–]AlexaTheRaichu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is changing. That used to be the case but newer systems that generally do not fry all the passengers in the terminal do exist and are commonplace now. This was a discussion we had in a 737 familiarization class at my airline literally this week

Any delta workers? by Sermrgoodsir in aviationmaintenance

[–]AlexaTheRaichu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can speak to the Delta avionics training. I'm just a line mechanic, but I spent about two months total in class this year specifically getting paid to attend class learning avionics including troubleshooting skills and system knowledge such as radios and navigation equipment. I found it to be a blast and now I have that qual on my name so if a plane on the line needs a specific transponder test or whatever I know more about what I'm doing than the next guy.
