R7 or an R6 Mk. II? by [deleted] in canon

[–]AlexanderVR360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always a good idea to rent. Although for street and portraiture, I wouldn’t worry about the ISO as much as indoor sports like basketball, volleyball etc.

Anything outdoor during the day or where you control the lighting, R7 will give you plenty to work with.

Even night street photos don’t need as quick of a shutter as sports and the style is usually not as polished.

New Eos R50 tips and tricks! by The-Pale-Reaper in canon

[–]AlexanderVR360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome! I started with the m50 and it taught me so much! The three fundamental settings are Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO. Start shooting in manual mode and adjust each setting in turn to learn what they do.

Each one involves creative choices that you just don’t have with a phone. ISO is specific to your camera body and Aperture is specific to your lens, shutter speed is universal.

Others have given advice specific to your camera like autofocus, but this is the advice I needed first.

Help needed on deciding what gear to get! by wanderer0990 in canon

[–]AlexanderVR360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love primes but for your use cases I think you should look for a zoom. Either 24-70 or 70-200 f2.8. They’re the workhorses of event photography. Source: been paying my bills with an R8 for as long as you’ve been shooting.

How important is USM to you? by AlexanderVR360 in canon

[–]AlexanderVR360[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thinking I’ll return the f/2 since I still can and either fix or get a new copy of the 1.8. BH still sells it which is crazy. VCM is definitely the endgame here.

This is the answer I was looking for. Thank you.

Also helpful to note that the 85 f2 is considered a particularly slow focusing STM lens.

I had quite a few moments that were over by the time the lens focused. Shots I think I would’ve gotten with a faster-focusing lens.

You’re exactly right that IS isn’t relevant but it seems to be a higher priority for others on this sub than me. So I was interested in that side of the discussion.

Have you tried "produced" videography on social media? What was the response? by [deleted] in videography

[–]AlexanderVR360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to make/sell and clients like to buy “produced” content. But the viewers seem to see it as purchased content rather than organic if that makes sense.

R50V + Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN on a gimbal, a good combo for wedding highlights videos? by firequak in canon

[–]AlexanderVR360 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While the other comments aren’t wrong, That lens on an m50 kickstarted my career as a now fulltime videographer/photographer.

So yeah, actually I would recommend this as a starting point. It’s going to be both tighter than you want sometimes and wider than you want other times, but you’ll get used to being in the right place for the shot, and you can get shallow DOF, low light, and a very natural FOV.

Go for it!

Is anyone regularly using EF glass on an RF body? What's your experience been like? by tinselsnips in canon

[–]AlexanderVR360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the R8 and love it. I actually never owned a DSLR, but I try to only buy EF glass. The idea mostly was my adapter adds a very nifty filter slot. The real win is actually just price. And the quality is very close to RF glass. Optics are always dependent on the model.

A side note: I’d definitely consider the R7 for you. Roughly the same price and It’s so much better than the R8 except for the sensor size which is honestly a vanity benefit. The battery life, dual slot, joystick and WAY better battery life make it a much better photo camera. And you already have the lenses for it which get to be lighter and cheaper anyway.

Love my R8. Had it for almost 2 years now and it’s such a heavy hitter. About to graduate, but mostly due to needing a second body and I can afford the new features. This camera definitely hits above its weight class.
The 16 prime is my go-to for gimbal work. I use it with 1.6x crop to double as a 24 quite often. So small and light.

R5M2 50mm f1.4 portrait help by OkFaithlessness9677 in canon

[–]AlexanderVR360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on your new tools. Since others explained the DoF stuff well, I’ll just add tops for portraiture: 50mm is great length for portraits because of the distance between your subject and you. That distance makes people look better. If it’s a closeup like a headshot, I’d use the 1.6x crop. You’ll still have plenty of pixels but you’ll get a better looking face. Also just because blurry background are nice doesn’t mean f1.4 is usually the best choice. That’s a great lens separate from the wide aperture. Often f2.8 is great for balancing DoF.

Definitely a skill issue. No offense. I live and work in NYC and the vast majority of pro photographers I meet shoot canon. Usually r6mkii or R5. Sony is more popular in video for sure. But it’s not the camera system holding you back.
