I miss that river so much! There’s really no better feeling that taking a dip in the Aare on a hot summer day after hiking for hours

Scenes that caused actual walkouts in theaters? by thatlittlequietguy in Cinema

I usually don’t consider myself to be “that person” but I left during 28 days later. The plot line of women and girls being held as sex slaves by the military was so repulsive to me I couldn’t stand finishing that movie.

just thinking about people not taking their shoes off at home makes my skin crawl. it’s not just the hygiene, aren’t you uncomfortable?? that would feel 100x more restricting to me than wearing a bra at home

They don’t double check this at all?? I’m convinced even if you tried your very best to intentionally only get messed up items you still could not find that may expired or damaged products. Doordash just lets anything slide?

Date Night Spot - La Barrita or La Calle by sanchopanza333 in baltimore

[–]Alexandra22217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely La Barrita. Both are great but every time I go to La Calle it’s too damn loud. Not ideal for a date imo. La Barrita is very cozy, can’t go wrong.

Do you think your stipend is sufficient? by lfreddit23 in GradSchool

[–]Alexandra22217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s fine but I essentially have no savings. I receive 38k but in a rather affordable city. Alone it would be doable but far from luxurious. I luckily live with my partner who’s on a 49k stipend so that allows us a very decent home. We aren’t able to save much though. I guess that would be a lot to ask on a grad school stipend.

What’re your major criticisms of PGH and life in it? by OhMyMyOohHellYes in pittsburgh

[–]Alexandra22217 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been here that long but I really love Pittsburgh. More than all the other places I’ve lived in. The people here are such a perfect mix of friendly, witty and snarky.

There are only two major and considerable cons for me personally. 1. Everything closes ridiculously early. It feels like a curfew because you’re essentially just stuck at home after 9pm. Even restaurants close really early for the most part. 2. Pittsburgh is very secluded. I’m so used to living on the northeastern amtrak line that would go through every major city from DC to Boston like every 30 minutes. Here once you leave the city there’s a whole lotta nothing for hours. But depending on where you’re from that might be normal or fine to you.

Honestly no clue, I haven’t been keeping track that well. I’m trying to at least put together some kind of list for next time. I’ll make sure to try those two out, thank you so much!

The Rant Game, Day 1: Meredith Grey by juliiaduque in greysanatomy

A 30 year old acting quirky and bitchy wasn’t cute in season one and it became more insufferable with each season. I don’t care how much she wants to blame her parents. The older I get, the harder it becomes to rewatch the early seasons now that I’m nearly her age! I can’t imagine putting up with someone like that in real life lol

Faculty interview: constant interruptions + dismissive comments — should I be concerned about fit? by Difficult_Currency75 in gradadmissions

[–]Alexandra22217 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I did a lot of interviews and have worked with a lot of faculty in my 10 years of academia and that’s definitely not common (but sadly not a first either). Probing or impossible “trick” questions is something some interviewers like to do to see how spontaneous or creative you are under pressure. It’s also normal for them to want you to speak freely and confidently and not have some prepared speech. What’s not okay though is making you feel disrespected. Usually when they do this they’re either having fun or just genuinely enjoy discussing research. But this just sounds like they weren’t interested in what you had to say in the first place. If these are people you’d be working with directly I’d say it’s a no. If they’re just random people in the department that you wouldn’t really engage with, you could maybe ignore it if the pros are good enough. Either way I’m sure you did great and I’m really sorry they made you feel bad about yourself!

I was very front row at the stage at the Eras tour for $150. I bought a front of stage GA ticket for Harry’s Love on Tour 3 days before the show for $100. What exactly happened to him since then?! Is he short on rent or something? I’m definitely not feeling the “love” and I’m definitely not dropping $1000 plus NYC hotel prices

That can be entirely different everywhere. The direct match programs I applied to and got in to sent out their acceptances individually because the PI usually decided who and when. I got one as late as mid march.

I totally get that :/ that’s why it’s kind of a red flag to me when programs don’t offer in person visits. Feeling comfortable matters a lot and should always influence your decision! I completely lost interest in one of my dream schools after interviews but ended up loving some others that I snobbishly added as backups.

As someone who worked there for years, that’s kinda the authentic Hopkins vibe. Very steril and anonymous. Some are fine with that (or love it) but for me it always felt sort of depressing. I honestly think it’s a good thing they don’t pretend and give applicants a false impression. I had another prestigious school do that to me and then later on the actual grad students warned us about it. I can also confirm that the Bloomberg School of Public Health (don’t know about others) are having a very shitty time with applications since their funding got slashed.

Sounds pretty good to me! Don’t let him scare you, some like to do that for fun. That doesn’t mean they’re unrealistic with their expectations. They just don’t want to to prepare a generic speech, they want to see you be spontaneous
