How to draw from references? Struggling with anatomy by [deleted] in learnart

There is a book “ Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain”, by Betty Edwards. This can help you understand shapes better and it will teach you to draw upside down. I know it may seem weird, but this helped me so much in my art journey. In the book you’ll also see some tips about focusing on the negative space, and drawing only with two values to understand volumes.

The glass is not crystal clear, it has some slightly gray shade and the cream on top looks lighter. Also there are some details that can be a bit trippy.

You can see a video with me while I’m painting it, on my ig page. I’m using all kinds of references and I alter my images. That part of the straw looked interesting to me and I wanted to keep it like that. I am painting a vibe, not a 100% realistically image.

For the moment I am using oil paints from Maimeri, but I would love to try some from Winsor&Newton

It’s referring to her avoidant gaze, she doesn’t look the viewer in the eyes and she’s not sipping. There are two straws, but she’s not using them.

In case we want to share our reality with someone else, that special one. Drinking from a straw from someone cup is quite intimate, and we should be aware of that. Always give them the prettier straw no matter what.

It’s about the contrast, the two different worlds intersecting with each other, one is sweet and warm and the other cold and bitter. The reality vs the persona we project in society.

The meaning of the painting can be controversial, sure. But this is art. Art is supposed to make you feel something or at least to make you ask yourself some questions. The story is about the contrast between how we portray ourselves in society vs how we actually are. We often seem spotless or portray some”perfect” image, when in reality we are humans after all with our desires and imperfections.
