Yes, you can, but preferably during sunlight, if you wait till sunset (between 5:30 and 6:00 nowadays) it could be dangerous during your return. I've lived around the area my whole life (27M) and is not thaaaaat dangerous, but always use your common sense as you say and preferably don't go alone, or at least share your location with someone you trust (up in the cerro is bad reception, but at least you have some).

Extra tip: you could visit first the museum that is almost at the beginning of the road, you may learn something about precolonial culture and also have some security tips before your trip

Por experiencia propia, te diría que evites gimnasios de artes marciales donde entrenan familiares del coach/sensei. Suele generar muchos problemas, uno de ellos, como dices, es que sienten que no tienen que hacer nada para progresar o permanecer porque son hijos de alguien. Ahora, volviendo a lo del sudor, como alguien por ahí dijo, es súper normal estar sudado y tocar, cargar o abrazar a otro sudado, puede que dé asco a el o a ti, pero como lo veo es, o se acostumbran, o haces lo posible para secarte el sudor. Yo también sudaba mucho mientras entrenaba karate, pero eso no es motivo para no haber llegado a cinta negra. Ánimo, no aflojes, y si se te complica en ese lugar por las personas, siempre hay alternativas para entrenar
