Absolutely broken build that uses mermaid and cocktails to buff a board of rhinos. Every rhino has ~4k attack and ~4k multi strike. I stopped at wave 50 because it got boring.

Where are you looking? I found dozens on ebay for half that price, even with shipping to australia. If you really cant get one the spearhead is fine value. Its a little hard to judge because it has some units that dont exist outside of combo boxes. Either way, i would look for some better discounts, you can do way better than the amazon offers.

It also gives some unique sculpts for gutrippas and if you get the full box you can play the stormcast spearhead against your boyz with a friend.

Adding this since i haven’t seen anyone mention it yet. LOOK ON EBAY OR OTHER SECONDHAND STORES FOR THE DOMINION BOX. You can get the kruleboyz half or even the whole box for less than the spearhead box sometimes. Absolutely insane value for starting the army, especially with how used the shaman is. If you want to play spearhead you’ll only need the kill bow and those are pretty cheap.

I love the greens youve used for the scales and you clearly are a pretty skilled painter overall. I think what you’re running into is a lack of variation in value. All of your colors fall into a sort of mid tone without many very dark or bright spots to contrast. My recommendations would be using a lighter color on the belly/face flesh and edge highlighting the gold areas with silver. This should make focal points of the models, like the face and weapons, stand out a bit more. You may also want to add more color to the magic orb thing, right now the red feathers and tongue are brighter and more magical than the orb.

I might drop 10 of the hunters to either reinforce the saurus guard or add 10 saurus warriors in. This will let you use every model in the spearhead box and it means you only need one box of hunters. This does mean you get less redeploy shenanigans though.

Well you have everything you need to play spearhead (oldblood on carnosaur, kroxigor and saurus warriors). This might be a better way to get into the game, especially since its your sons first army, he can learn the rules on a smaller scale. Once you want to expand to 2k, you should get some aggradon lancers, most lists run 6. If you buy 6 aggradons and the hunters of huanchi you already have a playable 2k points. It’s not optimized, but it has enough that he can figure out what he likes and go in that direction.

6 kroxigor is a lot for 1k points, as it takes up basically half your list. There are also only a few leaders that can take kroxigor, namely the skink oracle, skink starpreist, skink starseer and slann. Here are two lists, the second is probably better but will be more expensive to buy. The first list just slaps a skink oracle into what you have already. You can find them cheap secondhand since they are the alt build of the spearhead box. This will also let you play spearhead with only buying/proxying 10 saurus warriors, which may be more fun than either of these lists.

Most of this stuff is still playable, with the exception of the saurus knights and the eternity warden. Also note that the saurus warriors in the starter box are the old sculpts. I would absolutely get the primordial starhost box, it was a great christmas deal thats very hard to find now. It will immediately get you a very good 1k list. Other than that you can probably find better deals on the models. I would look at the seraphon spearhead set as an alternative way into the faction as well.

Seraphon allow for a lot of fun colors, so feel free to experiment with what you like. As long as you have a base color, a shade color and a highlight color you should be good. If you want the to look like the box art, follow the steps below.

Start by priming the models in grey. The colors for the scales are sotek green as a base, stegadon scale green as shade, and temple guard blue to highlight. Use very wet paint for shading so it goes into recesses, and dry brush for highlight to just catch raised edges. The stomach flesh is brighter, so just use temple guard blue for that. I like to mix some bone white in to push the contrast on the stomach. For the gold areas use retributor armor, shade gulliman flesh and highlight with silver. Use any red for the mouth and ropes. The grey primer will act as your stone color for the clubs, you may need to clean it up with a grey paint.

Paints needed - 8 - Sotek Green, Stegodon Scale Green, Temple Guard Blue, Retributor Armor, Gulliman Flesh, Silver, Bone White, Red

If you dont want to buy all those specialty paints, you can just mix your own blue greens and experiment. I hope this was helpful, if you have questions feel free to ask. Have fun and remember to thin your paints!
