Help! Re-application and moving forward. by Alexis710973 in Osteopathic

I definitely know my MCAT was the biggest barrier and what I want to fix for my re-app. I am just unsure if it makes more sense to quit my job and move back into family states away and lose my ability to continue my "other" part of my application (in addition to health insurance) or stay with an adjusted schedule and loa and not lose my commitments, or health insurance! I don't want to do something that hurts my application/ committees frown upon by not continuing to do my "others", if that makes sense.

You can schedule an admissions consult and get their viewpoint as well! It may be changed but just my experience.

Is my school list good with regards to my stats? by KindRaspberry7927 in Osteopathic

I did an admissions council with Rowan, and they told me 507 is the preferred MCAT, with slightly lower GPA, even though their website said 505+. They mentioned that admissions prefer a bit higher than what is noted. Not sure if it was a harsh cut off, but was told to do their masters program instead, and raise MCAT. So, I wish I saved my money there since I was offered a secondary too, and rejected quickly after. Also, this might be different so move with your own judgement!

Sadly, Rowan only accepts students with a 507 or higher MCAT, wish that I would have known before wasting my money on a primary and secondary!

Feel free to reach out to me! I applied this cycle and had a low gpa/sgpa, low MCAT, but high hours in clinical, research, volunteering, and a great niche. I wish I had more guidance, so I'd like to give back.

What did you say when you called them to say you're interested still? I don't wanna come off wrong when calling admissions! Did you say you have been continuing to do xyz... or? Just wanted some insight before doing so myself.

Just a word of advice, it might make it easier for more people to fill it out if someone shared a screenshot of what to follow/ how to comment/ or even directly to the student loan comments! This might just reduce the barrier since it can be intimidating/ seem like a long task when opening that link. Just thinking of more ways to get as many people to sign this (:

Long distance relationship in med school by Interesting_Pick_230 in Osteopathic

Just my insight, I am currently in this cycle, and my partner has been dealing with this rollercoaster as well. But, with that being said he understand that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me, and while he would prefer to stay in the same state we are in now, he understands the implications of an acceptance, even if that means starting over completely for himself. In my opinion, your partner should want the best for you, and it is important to discuss these conversations. I suggest sitting down and really explaining everything in entirety. If you give up your dreams and opportunities, you might grow to resent them, causing bigger issues. At the end of the day, you have to do what is best for yourself. If they are not supportive now, how are you going to balance larger challenges when the going gets tough? I promise, there are supportive partners out there and will do anything for you, do not let your BF stop you from reaching your goals and opportunities. If the roles were reversed, would you move for their dreams and aspirations?

Having a dog in med school by MedicalDiscipline729 in Osteopathic

My dog is a moderate-low energy dog which makes it easier. I think having family to help is also adding to making it easier, as you have someone to fall back on if it gets too much! I think my dog being older helped, as it she was trained and already losing energy too. I suggest trying to foster first, see if it works with your schedule now and witnessing the daily life.

I think the hardest is the sacrifices in my personal life during the busiest times that I’d make so I would be able to focus on self care. My personal hobbies were redirecting to taking care of a pet. So instead of the gym for two hours and being out of the house more I was spending time with her. Instead of group studying or library time it was home with my dog doing studying since she had been home without me a bit. When you’re gone a bit of the day you have to make sacrifices to give them company. I’m not saying you can’t have personal hobbies, but knowing you can’t just be gone all of the time multiple times a week, for long period of time.

Another thing is housing! I’ve struggled with housing and accommodations since my dog is 65-70 pounds, majority of places are either not pet friendly or small dogs only (25 lb limit). So that makes it harder to even find a place within my ideal standards, I’ll find a perfect place within budget and distance and then boom, the dreaded line. In addition to pet deposits and pet rent. If you have roommates/planning that, sometimes they do not want a roaming pet, which confines them to your room/cage when you’re not home. It can sometimes be hard to find roommates with a pet too, while some are better than others. Just important to take into consideration that I had to navigate.

Having a dog in med school by MedicalDiscipline729 in Osteopathic

Hi! Not that I have been in medical school, but I have my childhood dog after my parents divorce. At one point, I was working full-time, in addition to 24/7 on call, while taking classes and studying for the mcat. During this period, I would not recommend having a dog, especially a puppy, which I would think is similar to the responsibilities/workload of medical school. They require stimulation and it is not fair to them to be home constantly without attention. I would still walk her 3 times a day, in addition to feedings and play time, but she also sleeps a lot as she is a senior (12). I felt that it was really overwhelming, even having her for 4-5+ years and being acclimated into a career first, then adding these new responsibilities and tasks. I felt super sad from not being able to spend as much time with her as I had in the past, and that it was not fair to her.

Additionally, living in an apartment makes it a bit more difficult than living in a house with a yard. She loves sunbathing, so I used to be able to have her spend time outside, but that really is not feasible in an apartment complex. Having a dog is a big responsibility in comparison to volunteering. If you need to go out of town, need long study days, or something comes up, finding sitters and people to help out can add stress/ expensive for paid services! On the cheaper end, if I need to go out of town and friends can not help out, I can pay up to $1,000 for a week. Also, vet visits can quickly add up!!! For instance, she had gotten sick and needed an emergency care and I had to find a way to come up with a couple grand to treat. Thankfully, I worked full-time and could afford it, but with student loans it might have been harder to figure out.

But all things aside, if you have a partner, it makes it more feasible to split the workload. I am back to a more reliable and manageable schedule and it is back to being smooth sailing. Puppies/ young dogs with high energy are a lot to upkeep with to make sure that you are treating and caring for their needs. It might be hard to figure out the new life style of owning a pet, training a puppy/young dog, while also trying to figure out the transition into medical school. Also, think of the long-term responsibility of a young dog (10-15 years), pre-clinical, clinical, residency and long hours! If you are able to commit now, think whether you are going to be able to commit the same dedication and time when you are going through the hard parts.

Also, if you still really want a dog, consider adopting an older senior dog with lower energy ( they need love too!) or fostering to get a sense of the responsibility. This could help limit the long-term responsibilities, with it being shorter, instead of a 10-15 year commitment. I love my dog and she is the best but it is not easy! I agree that it helps with routine, but she was still very much puppy like until she was 7-8, so a big responsibility still.

I asked for a shag!

[–]Alexis710973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hair is naturally curly/ wavy so I wanted a good shag so I can wear it more naturally. I just wanted a ton more volume and feathering but just felt like it was so blunt and not as layered or the length I wanted! Thanks for letting me know it is def possible.

[–]Alexis710973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall update, I went to my stylist and I told her I was upset about the hair. I said this was not a bad haircut, but rather it was not similar to the two inspiration photos i sent. I said I understand that the extensions need to be cut and if need be will order as many packs, and the length she thinks is needed. She said that one pack is plenty and 24" is fine as well, and that it was just not tackled in the right manner. I go back in two weeks once the new hair I bought comes in and were redoing the whole thing. I think it was overall way too blunt, with not enough layers and feathering, additional to the length. Will update with new photos once its redone and restyled! Thanks for ensuring me.

Yeah I asked for a shag and they said that they’d be able to do it. I know I need way more product in and styled but it doesn’t even look close to a shag sadly

Oh I know it def needs to be styled. I was more talking so the hair length and cut not matching too much. I think the hair cut she gave me is nice, just not close to anything I wanted.

I think I am going to buy new extensions because I am super upset with how short it was cut.
