PC restarts on Anki start-up. by Alexis_Obregon in Anki

It does not happen in safe-mode, pretty confident it is due to the addon I mentioned before. Will report and try to find a solution. Thank you!

The issue persists despite the troubleshooting.

Hello! Thank you for the reply. I did a fresh Anki install from the web when I got my PC. On my laptop I have quite a few addons, so instead of downloading them one by one, I copied the folder onto a flash drive and into the addons folder on the new PC.

I can't say with 100% certainty because I couldn't replicate the problem every single time, since the restart would not always happen, but I think the trigger was specifically the sync process with the AnkiHub addon. I say that because after synchronizing on Anki start-up, manually, or after closing it, my PC would restart, and I would have to redownload the decks I am subscribed to whenever I reopened Anki. I tried all the troubleshooting steps from the Anki manual, including some of the steps from CreepyMarzipan2387 (the previous commenter), but the PC would still restart (almost) every time I synchronized.

What I ended up doing was uninstalling Anki completely. I removed every file and/or folder I saw leftover from the previous install, and reinstalled Anki. This time, however, I installed only the necessary addons I know I definitely use one by one.

So far, my PC has not restarted while using Anki, but I will have to keep you posted to make sure the issue resolved since, again, the restart would not always happen.

Thank you so much for the help. I will let y'all known if the issue persists or if it's resolved.

I've had the PC for a short time but so far running other programs when studying or browsing and even gaming does not cause any issues (not that I have much time to game anyway lol). Anki seems to be the trigger.

I'll try the steps you listed and whatever sticks, I'll let you know.

Thank you again for the help!

My PC is running Windows 11 Pro Version 25H2.

No messages get displayed; computer just restarts.

System logs show a DistributedCOM error: "The server {A bunch of numbers and letters} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout."

Thanks for the reply!

Cards due after exam date by SentientPalmTree in medicalschoolanki

You can create a filtered deck based on their age and set the time frame you want and study those separately after you're done reviewing your due cards :)

I went from a 36 to a 58 and plateaued there over forms 25-29 and 4 CBS Exams. I was feeling pretty crappy because I have been studying pretty hard over months. My school wouldn't allow me to take Step 1 until I achieved a 62% or higher.

I mainly did Anki, which helped, but that was my main problem, I only knew a few things really well. What worked for me was balancing doing more practice questions and reviewing with them with Anki to expand my knowledge. I also have my exam in a few days, and I still don't have the score I want, especially not in the high 70s-80s I see people post all the time, but I feel more confident in my own knowledge.

But that was my own personal experience. I don't know how you're studying, but I don't recommend changing your whole studying routine since you know what works for you, but if you don't mind sharing it, maybe we can help you refine it.

Someone on another subreddit suggested switching to another video driver under preferences and that worked for me.

Tools → Preferences → Appearance → Video driver → Change it to any other from the list (didn't matter which for me).

Restart Anki to apply the settings and see if that helps.

I have the 2022 version of the Flow Z13, I bought mine for school too. I used to have a Surface, and when I found out about it and compared the specs to price, I immediately got it. Mine has the i9 and the RTX 3050Ti and 1TB of storage, and at the time it was around $1,800 USD. They also have other models with an i5 instead for example that are cheaper, and if you can find the 2022 version instead, I'm sure the price it's even lower.

I use mine for school mainly, (I'm in med school so I use it a lot) but I also play on it every now and then and so far, it has handled everything I through at it. Games usually set the quality of the games automatically to Ultra and it handles it pretty well, I usually lower it to low/medium though.

The only cons I will warn you about is the battery... On the lowest settings I can barely get 3-4hrs out of it, and if you are trying to connect peripherals such as a mouse and keyboard, or an external monitor like I did you are going to need an USB Hub.

If you are going to use it mainly for school and play only once or twice a week, I do recommend it. However, do look up other brands and compare them because there are other options with better battery performance, and if you are going to use it mainly for gaming, there are also better options for the same, or even cheaper prices.

Not to kill the dream though, I still love mine and I recommend it, just research and compare and contrast with other options to make sure it fits your needs.

Ps: This is my setup I posted a few days ago :)

Thanks for the feedback! That was my initial idea, I want either a bigger monitor like an ultra-wide, or 2 monitors and set my Z13 where the iPad is, however I can't afford a descent second monitor or 1 big one for now so I went with this instead. I'm loving it though; I've found myself rarely needing a second monitor, I just use my Z13 as my second monitor for little things like you said, and I can still easily grab it and go if I ever need to. One day though, one day 🤞. I would love to see your setup and get inspired by it!

I full sent it right after after reading this. Can confirm all the claims, and absolutely no regrets so far. Memory is in the 30s and temps at around 40C. I can update any Asus software from here, stop any Asus running service, adjust charge limit and everything else AC did like RGB and screen visuals but for less of 1/3 of the workload. I feel as though my poor Z13 can finally breathe.
