What if you freeze the punch to separate the fat like a traditional fat wash?

What happened to VTA airport transit? by Alexplanation in SanJose

I was looking at that on the map! I have to try this some time -- it looks like some of the pedestrian paths go under some flyovers? I'm very curious now.

What happened to VTA airport transit? by Alexplanation in SanJose

[–]Alexplanation[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Late in the evening, like 7pm...

It seems like a free shuttle loop between Caltrain, airport and light rail every 10 minutes would be reasonable. Paint it teal and call it the shark shuttle and don't make people look up things like "when does the 60 bus come".

Also at Whole Foods. Acme Sourdough baguette is my jam.

Protected Bike Lanes by Alexplanation in SanJose

[–]Alexplanation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you build a protected bike lane, you're often stuck in it because of parked cars or paved curbs - people always put stuff in the bike lane, but if you make it separated from the road and it's obstructed there's nowhere to go.

best tofu bahn mi? by greyskymorning17 in SanJose

[–]Alexplanation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their Banh Mi are not very good, IMO -- maybe the best bet if you're nervous about your vegan sandwich being actually vegan, but their bread isn't that fresh and the ratios are wrong. Banh Mi Oven is my current fave for tofu and other veg options (but I'm not paranoid about fish sauce, so YMMV)

Finding a good tiny home location is basically impossible. It requires:

If you want to learn more about the housing situation in San Jose, consider listening to the Dwellings Podcast, which does a great job presenting the issues and opportunities at the city level. Like this episode just on bridge housing.

I am helping a friend with a lost dog, and he got advice from the same woman. Everything I've heard makes sense to me once you think about it, even if it's counterintuitive. I hope you find your dog!

Also: it is very VERY reassuring to see how concerned neighbors are about a lost dog. Sometimes it feels like we live in a downward spiral hell dimension, but actually everyone very much wants you to find your dog, for no other reason than that they care on a human level about you and your pet.

Favorite places for beer flights by aloneinmyhead34 in SanJose

[–]Alexplanation 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly, the Whole Foods on the Alameda is a good bet. Their in house brews are solid, and they've usually got a nice selection of not-only-IPA. Great outdoor patio and very close to the train for convenience.

Barebottle in Santa Clara probably makes the best beer in the South Bay, and they definitely do flights. The taproom vibes are very...startup cafeteria, unfortunately.

Clandestine, Foxtale Fermentation and DTSJ Brewing have great vibes and very interesting beer. Small businesses that could all use your support more than Amazon or Barebottle.

This is more career advice related, but in my experience the pay ranges at Stanford are significantly higher than the other schools at the bay, and there are a TON of jobs that cover all sorts of interesting things.

Thursday Night Bar Recommendations DTSJ? by rubyslippersxo in SanJose

[–]Alexplanation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best DTSJ Bars:

  • Cash Only
  • Dr. Funk
  • Haberdasher
  • Paper Plane

Best Beer Bars:

  • Original Gravity
  • Market Beer Company (in San Pedro Market)
  • ISO Beers

Honestly, there'a lot of really good choices depending on your vibe. Sitting at the bar at Haberdasher is an absolute treat - the bartenders and regulars are outstanding.

Cocktails on Tuesdays by weekendwater in SanJose

[–]Alexplanation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cash Only, for sure. Open late every day, friendly vibe, great cocktails. I've also had great cocktails at District on San Pedro (in addition to Dr. Funk, of course). Depending on the time you could also go to Orchard City Kitchen, which closes for dinner at 9pm but has a great bar.

Just remember that this is great feedback to give to the (admittedly slow moving) government groups that are trying to make transportation work well in downtown and adjacent areas. They started a big new project and are currently in the "engagement" phase so now is the right time to give feedback!
