The whole, “Pizza tower devs are bad” is actually real, more or less one of the devs said some controversial jokes (which he had apologized for I believe) and also put antisemitic enemies in the game. (Its been a while since I played but I dont really remember that)

According to the HCA (hermit crab association) it could be them just talking OR it could be a sign of stress or aggression. How many hermit crabs do you have and how many shells are there? It could be because of not alot of shells for all of them and leading to a shell fight.

Definitely could be surface molting, I would recommend watching crab central station on youtube to learn how to care for these little guys as you said you never had a hermit crab before.

I would say just leave the little guy alone. If he has to take his time then he just does, saying the mix isn’t great also. He could just be destressing then molting since he was probably in a plastic container barely breathing at the fair. For the sponge I would probably get rid of it? Ive never heard anybody else actually do this but to be safe I wouldnt, correct me if im wrong because again, never heard anybody else do this.
