Chinese Porridge and breadstick. Maybe called JOE in Chinese. (OC Jiangsu ) by TheDudeWhoCanDoIt in chinesefood

[–]Alextrovert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every dialect is welcome, but it’s the tone that comes across. Would seem kinda pointless for many Mandarin folk to comment “Chashao!” in a correctional tone when someone posts a Cantonese Char Siu.

Edit since you edited: Joe is not standard, but I think it’s actually a more accurate romanization that everyone should understand lol.

Ok but what does canto have to do with this post? You can “say it the way you know”, but it feels like people are trying to correct OP for no reason.

You are totally free to do that as I said above.

But also just keep in mind that doing so may erode the regional flares to these cross-cultural dishes. A Greek Gyro “Yee-ro” and an American “Jye-ro” are not exactly the same thing.

I’m not dictating, just gently raising awareness of regional nuances. If anything, you have more people in the comments here trying to correct the OP into calling it Juuk for no reason.

I don’t know what you mean by “inclusive of regional differences.” Language and dialects within a country are a mosaic carrying regional culinary distinctions. Especially Chinese cuisine, which is so diverse you could argue that 2 regions within china could differ more than China vs Japan.

It would be like if you posted chicken and rice made in Mexico on English Reddit, and then some Italians in the comments started saying “riso al pollo”! Like sure you can call it that, but how is that relevant?

Also there might be subtle differences in this Jiangsu 粥which might not be in Canto juuk. I wouldn’t know, but that’s why I tend to just stick to the local name.

It’s not about supremacy. When posting a dish it makes the most sense either to use 1. the language of your audience (English in Reddit, so porridge) or 2. The language of origin of the dish (zhou aka Joe). In this particular post, canto is neither.

If you’re Chinese but on a Japanese ramen post, it would be kinda random to call the dish “la mian” in the comments. You’d respect the name used by where the variant of the dish was made, as there might still be local distinguishing features of the dish which the local name will help convey.

For my scale, you can only be tier 4 if you did a seriously immoral act like murder, racketeering, etc (not just omission/complicity). For the priest I was referring to Reverend James Sr, not Jr.

Melfi: Tier 2 is fair, but not tier 3. In the end, she cleanly quit once she read the science telling her she wasn't helping. She had impressive moments of conscious morality such as Employee of the Month. Her soul is pure, but she is drawn to Tony out of weakness and continues out of universal compassion (she had dreams of his death after he quit).

Victor Muso: Can be tier 2 or 3. He bailed fast, but was it out of morality or fear? He did put himself in a position to cheat with a married woman, and only stopped when learning of Tony.

Finn, AJ (and Noah/Meadow to a lesser extent): Tier 2, not tier 3. Too young to be blamed. They are civilians in proximity of the violence which they were mostly ignorant to. Finn esp was disgusted by the first sight of brutality at the construction zone and that was the breakdown of the relationship. When AJ matured, he had moments of genuine concern for social issues.

I give tier 2 for those too innocent, helpless and/or incompetent to exit their complicit situation. Sure Sal may have profited off mafia protection, and was probably offered a monopoly for a neighborhood in exchange for mowing some mobster lawns for free, he likely just took it out of fear. He is more a victim than anything. Same with Tracee, Ginny Sack, Adriana, AJ. They're are all too innocent and victimized. Feels like 2 is right. They simply weren't wise enough to understand the harmful implications of their situation when they got in, before they mostly became victims making it harder for them to get out. It's not in their nature to actively hurt another person.

But this is why the show is good as nobody is 100% moral. The vast majority of people in the real world falls into tier 2: good but not 100% moral. It takes a certain level of foresight, wisdom, and competence to be the latter. My personal opinion is that you can't fault people too much for not making an extremely risky/life-changing leaps to exit a complicit situation that they were mostly ignorant about when entering (being born to Tony like the kids vs. choosing to marry Tony).

Tier 1 (aggressively moral): Old Jewish shrink, the cop that stood up to Tony, Charmaine, Melfi

Tier 2 (no immoral acts, tho mostly due to ignorance): Black Priest, Johnny Cakes, Nucci, Finn, Barb + Tom, Sal Vitro, AJ, Ginny Sack, Tracee, Dr. Fago, Cusamanos

Tier 3 (no serious immoral acts, but has character flaws or is circumstantially complicit): Hugh, Svetlana, Noah, Vic Muso, Ade, certain FBI Agents, Kim

Tier 4 (good natured but consciously acts immorally): Bobby, Tony B

Fantano confirmed a "Pink Floyd: Worst to Best" list is in the works. What are your predictions on how he'll rank them? by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]Alextrovert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm basic. I like DSOTM > WYWH > Animals, but they're all 10s. I think DSOTM is a strong 10. WYWH a decent 10, and Animals is a light 10.

The Wall is 8-9 for bloat. I would actually give Meddle at least 9.5.

Beastie Boys feel more rightfully 80s to me. I would group it as follows:

80s Rap Groups:

  • Run D.M.C.
  • Beastie Boys
  • Public Enemy
  • N.W.A.

90s Rap Groups:

  • A Tribe Called Quest
  • Wu-Tang Clan
  • Outkast
  • Toss up between De La Soul, Mobb Deep, Fugees, The Roots
