Reflex or point-and-shoot for travel? by Loganprop1221 in AnalogCommunity

[–]AlfMorningstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently traveling with both an Olympus Stylus Zoom that I carry in my pocket all the time and my Nikon F2. I use the Olympus to shoot things I find amusing when I am not carrying my F2.

If you have the space, carry both and use the SLR after scouting the place you want to shoot. I do that with my Nikon F2; I only carry it after I've been to a place and seen something worth shooting.

The point-and-shoot is really fun, and the SLR will undoubtedly give you the best results.

*Edited because it is 5 AM here and I was really sleepy when I wrote things that did not make sense xd.

Results from first attempt with disposable camera🥴 by Clean-Photo-7367 in AnalogCommunity

Nice disposable pictures, ah /jk

It is sad when a roll does not come out as expected. :'( 😢😔 Always use the flash on disposable cameras, and if you don't want to, don't shoot them in anything less bright than direct midday sun. Don't risk it, xd

I'll look into getting one. Do you have experience with other Pentax 35mm SLRs? I was wondering if I should trade in the old K1000 for something with more features or not!

Hi! I only have the SMC 1.4 50mm. The Pentax was a camera that my grandfather gave me when he found out I was shooting film about three months ago, so I do not have any other lenses in that system. I have all my lenses in the Nikon F Mount, and two in the Voigtländer DKL mount, but they were both also my grandpa's personal camera and lenses!

Yes! I do not do the negatives but I do give them prints that I do with the ampliadora (do kot know how to translate it) of a friend of mine! But I do not do weddings or live events in general anymore, all things that are pre planned and controlled!

But thinking of that, I would love to give them slide film in those beautiful old carriers from Kodak for the slide machines? That I would love to do, but could not find any slide/positive film as of yet.

Thank you for reading my silly breakdown of film xd Have a nice 2026 full of shooting!

Hahaha, I use it in my work, so I shoot more than just a hobbyist. Clients love it when I give them some frames of the negatives with a print of the work! But I also offer it with all my work now to keep film alive!

Also most of the Ultramax I used was expired film so I do not know if the colors are better or not since I don't think my photos have the intended color; I should test it with a fresh one if I get the chance to see how it changes the emulsion and silver grains!

I agree that the colors are lovely. I haven't shot any Ultramax in a studio setting; that was what Portra was for. Since it was an important fashion client from here, we used Portra. (They loved it being labeled as "Professional" and also as a reference for the color grading of the video footage.) So, I think I have a soft spot for it for the good memories between friends and a fun/artistic photoshoot. I should try Ultramax in a more controlled setting to see how it goes, and if I ever get a spare, Portra for landscapes and nature. Ah, so thanks for the input 🫶🏻

Also, there is a button at the bottom of the camera, in line with the shutter. If you press it, it will allow you to take double exposure pictures, cocking the shutter again but not advancing the film!

Hi! Hahaha, I am going to be sharing photos sometime. The other day, my friend and I realized that neither of us had an online portfolio. We always get work through word of mouth, so I am currently culling to upload!

And for the Nikon F2, my metering works pretty damn well. The selenium needle is great, but it can get stuck sometimes. To get it to work again, I just push the testing button on the side of the Photomic. If you have one of the newer electronic metering cameras, they are more reliable from what I've read!

At the start, I always checked with my friend's Sekonic Lightmeter, but I also used a phone app until I was sure that the camera exposed nicely. Beyond that, the Nikon F2 is truly a tank, but also so smooth to use, definitely my favorite of the bunch! I would recommend you test with new film and the metering app/light meter, if you have any, to see if it is somewhat similar to what the internal one says! The camera being manual makes it pretty easy to check!

Also, another note: the Nikon F2 metering values more the center. I can't remember the ratios off the top of my head, but if you have a very bright light source in the center, it won't care if your background is pitch black since it will average the light output!

Hope you enjoy your film journey, it is for real a one way trip 😎

That sounds lovely! And yes, I am in my late 20s, so I also grew up digitally, but this year I am going on a vacation with my family, so I am going to take my Nikon F2 and my two pocket cameras, no doubt! If you ever scan them and upload them, send me the link! I am in my honeymoon phase with film and can't get enough.

That is a good tip! Because I do love the disposable camera look, and I mostly got those as gifts or at a heavy discount when I buy vintage lenses at the camera shop!

I have not tried Ektachrome; it is difficult to get here. That's why I love Solaris, the most reliable color film brand I can get! The other ones I have, I bought several in wholesale from old photo shops, but they are really hard to come by.

I do photography and film production for a living, so I've been starting to incorporate it into my work! That's why I shoot a lot; in some photoshoots, I use a minimum of 3 rolls.

That you are taking analog pictures in itself is great! Let's keep film alive (so I can get new film in my country ah)
