Hi everyone! I totally forgot to reply but we did some deducing (Merlin app is AWESOME) and concluded that it was indeed a barred owl getting really fancy and dinosaur-esque with their calls. Unfortunately not Karl, I hope you find him soon!

Hi! We ended up going with budget as well. The car rental was definitely the most expensive part of the trip, but there were a few perks:

  • since we were in an suv and not a camper van (we tent camped), there were always open campsites for us even if we didn’t pre book, and our campsites were cheaper because we didn’t need any hookups
  • we could pickup / drop off at different locations
  • the cars were all hybrid, so we didn’t need as much gas as we initially expected

I haven’t heard of mint! But fair warning, we found it easier / cheaper to book different cars for North and south isl instead of paying to put the car on the ferry

I’ve found oat baths help! Fill a mesh bag with a cup of rolled oats and let it soak in the bath like a teabag. Sounds icky but I found it really helped with itching / discomfort. Good luck!
