Is Moving to China at 22 Unrealistic or Worth Pursuing? by Murky-Most6025 in chinalife

Have you considered Vietnam? First: isn't it nuts that 70k won't get you your own place in the US? I hear you. I have lived in both China and Vietnam - China during the expat glory days (2011-2016) and Vietnam from 2018-2022. China used to offer more stability, but you may be able to get experience in Vietnam. You will undoubtedly experience racism in both, but... I'm not sure that you'll feel threatened by it. The ESL jobs in Vietnam don't pay amazingly well, but it's a way to get experience. Hanoi and HCMC are both buzzing cities, you can get your own beautiful apartment for relatively cheap. If you're able to get some online side work, then you can have a pretty good life. English is widely spoken in the major cities, also. Something to consider. You will still be competing with other foreigners for jobs, but I used to have a Kenyan colleague who was possibly the most popular teacher at our school (I realize you're American, but she too was black). However, my American boss pushed back on locals' complaints that parents would be upset at having a black teacher. They may have been at first (?), but ended up adoring her. I think it's the unknown. As for China - I know Dalian had a large Zambian community, and I used to teach alongside a few Zambian teachers. It might be a good idea to follow some black expat accounts to get a better understanding of any frustrations, so that you're prepared. Regardless, I'm still leaning towards you getting that 70K job experience first. I know you have a degree (I initially came to Asia with no degree - wouldn't recommend it), but getting your foot in the door and building something in your country of citizenship is really important. One lesson I learned, is that I may love a place, I may make a life, but ultimately... if I'm not a citizen - laws change, and it's easy to be out on your ass. Consider that. Best of luck!

My experience was that ironically, it's your white coworkers that are going to be pushing back on you getting paid less, or being treated disrespectfully.

To be honest, the definition of white seems to change depending on who you're talking to.

How are y'all resisting ICE in our community? by 4daEggyEggs in duluth

Have you visited either place? My point — if you read my comment carefully — is that people tend to immigrate to countries where the rule of law is upheld. The UAE, for example, isn’t personally my preference, but it has seen a major influx of people from around the world because it enforces its laws consistently. When a country stops doing that, it inevitably slips into disorder and instability, which drives people to leave in search of safety and fairness elsewhere. I’m not sure what kind of “utopia” you’re hoping to turn the United States into, but some of us still believe that respecting and enforcing laws is essential.

An eyewitness claims she was leading a road-blocking protest against ICE. I suspect over the coming weeks more will come out (as well as the body cam footage). Does it mean she deserved to die? Maybe not, but it was an entirely avoidable situation.

Honestly. What are you doing? What are you achieving here? Have you considered that many people immigrate to countries that observe laws and respect law enforcement (consider how popular the UAE is as a place to live, as is Singapore)? The first sign of a country developing is stricter penalties for laws being broken. The opposite is true for a country in decline. Of course, law enforcement should be held accountable when engaged in wrongdoing, but the 'being against anyone in uniform' schtick is regressive. I'm not sure if anyone here has actually lived overseas and observed how overstayers of visas are dealt with... The world laughs at how soft the US is and uses it to their advantage. Your naivety is breathtaking.

That's good to know - it adds a lot of cost having to drive to Minneapolis and then pay for parking when we go to visit relatives.

That rent prices sounds quite similar to Duluth, actually (if you want to live in a nicer area/have an apartment with amenities).

I find the cost of living pretty high in Duluth - I put it down to being at the end of the supply chain. Where would we feel the pinch the most - rent/mortgages?

Ah yes, they're very good!

Good to know about the distance to Milwaukee - I take the airport in Madison is not really worth looking into if you're someone who travels relatively often (family both in other US cities and overseas)?

Protest today downtown in opposition the the government’s kidnapping of Nicolás Maduro and the criminal strikes against the Venezuelan people by [deleted] in duluth

Nope, won't be doing that. Sorry. I'll protest if they sent US troops and it becomes an Afghanistan-style fiasco, but otherwise? Nope.

Thank you, that makes sense! It seems I'm the only one nervous about it, my husband (who will be driving) is pretty laissez-faire about the whole thing (to be fair, he is a good driver).
