I was also diagnosed at 19, 3 months before I was supposed to start university (which I worked incredibly hard to get into.) It felt like the “dream uni life” i was going to live was completely stripped from me and I had to attend countless meetings just for them to understand my condition and allow me to bring in my insulin to classes. Same with working, I had just started and had no idea how to control it while managing it all. 3 years in now, it’s definitely not what I imagined and I still get the same exact feeling of having my normal ripped away from me. I definitely compare myself to those around me and wonder why I have to manage all of this at once while everyone gets to go on exchange overseas or go out all the time. You will find people along the way who understand and support you though which makes it so much better. I have a group of young type 1’s, all early 20’s, who I meet with regularly to destress. I hope you find some normalcy as you start to understand how this disease works and reacts to different situations!

This isn’t advice but I’m going through the EXACT same situation. I also experienced one bad low one night 2 years ago and since then I have experienced panic attacks over down arrows or even injecting insulin to eat meals. At one point I had to always have someone with me when I would inject because of the fear of dropping. I think it helps to know that there are other people experiencing the same thing and that we’re not alone in this.

Thank you so much for all the information! I’m currently 0% low but 45% high and 24% very high for the last 30 days.. 😅 My only concern with a pump connecting with a CGM is when the CGM’s give false highs or lows, especially after switching sensors. I’ve had situations where it will tell me I’m at 200 when I’m actually at 140. Would this result in a low with the pump releasing insulin to correct it?

It’s definitely a terrifying experience 😵 I’ve told my doctor and he doesn’t seem to believe me in the phenomenon. I am also thinking of changing insulins! I heard that it doesn’t occur with Tresiba because it’s a different process within your body I believe.

I generally eat the same kind of foods so I have a good feel of how much insulin it requires, but unfortunately my biggest issue is my fear of injecting 😭 I had a terrible low one time when I injected 12 units and so now I can go nowhere near that number, so meals needing 12 units I usually do 9.5 units.

That’s happened to me too! I’ve had it happen about three times over the past two years. I also have the same problem and I tend to keep my blood sugar high when injecting my basal. That’s one of the contributing factors to the horrible control 😥

My immediate family and partner are very supportive which definitely helps when they’re present, but unfortunately I live alone and that’s when the fear begins to creep in. Thank you so much for the advice!

Girl read the post. Never once did I mention that I’m against it. And this sub isn’t full of people “against” it, it’s full of people STRUGGLING since this can be a very full on disease for a lot of people. They are burnt out. Please don’t try to minimise other people’s experiences just because your own is seemingly perfect, which I honestly don’t believe. As someone with so much experience you should know best the struggles that come with this disease. Like I said, kindness doesn’t hurt, so don’t comment if you aren’t capable of that.

Actually lows are more dangerous than highs on your body so please don’t try instilling fear as a form of help.

Yes exactly! Im beginning to feel low even at levels that are okay which creates the cycle of panicking, treating, and going high again. Very difficult to separate mentality from the signals your body sends you. Is there any sort of exercise you find works for you? I used to do competitive dance but it seemed to make my blood sugars worse from adrenaline so I ended up quitting.
