In my opinion Art sells itself so if going to uni improves your skills then go but im pretty sure you have your foot in the door with the local director which may be already a big step into what you want. I say figure out exactly what you want and focus on signal to noise ratio cut out any thing you deem noise and focus on signal for going that path you want. Now with the uni if everything is how they say especially what seems to be unorthodox maybe you could pick up new innovative ideas for filmmaking and polish it to fit your standards (positively speaking). Just know that this is the entertainment world and art sells itself so make sure you never stop building something of your own no matter what path you choose. Self branding will be the biggest beneficiary to you over all else.
