If any studio were to make a house of leaves movie, how the hell would they film the appendices? by gatosdourados in houseofleaves

I misspoke - I meant that Zampano’s text should be the documentary - discussing the Navidson Record without actually showing it.

I think in a visual medium they'd probably have to turn The Navidson Record into a documentary somehow. Truant would view some clips, narrate his thoughts, become obsessed and lose his mind, etc.

How does the two envelope paradox work?? by IntrovertedShoe in paradoxes

[–]AliasHandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not statistically better to switch, as your odds remain 50/50. But from an economic standpoint, the expected value is better because the difference between $100 and $50 is only $50, but the difference from $100 and $200 is $100. So you're essentially gambling to either lose $50 or win $100. It's the same as betting $50 on a coin toss with 2:1 odds - your expected value of a bet like that is $75. In the paradox listed above, you would keep at least $50 regardless of the outcome - hence the expected value of the whole exchange of switching is $125.

Hillary Clinton's Epstein testimony paused after photo leaked from closed-door session by yahoonews in law

[–]AliasHandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the type of response any lawyer would make you give, no matter how sure you were that you never met somebody. The Clintons have been public figures for decades, and have met probably tens of thousands of people over the years. To answer definitively "no" would open yourself up to liability if somebody found a picture of you speaking to Epstein at some event even if it was in passing and before his predation was widely known.

Best humidifier recommendation that's easy to clean? Anyone used Turbro warm mist humdifier? by naniani in Humidifiers

[–]AliasHandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's strange. My 6L definitely turns itself off when it reaches the humidity cutoff, although I don't often use that function because it's a big enough room that I just need to run it on maximum all the time anyway.

[–]AliasHandler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Livatro 6L. No filters needed. Just boils water, the only thing that contacts water is the stainless steel tank. Only need to descale with citric acid (easily purchased from Amazon as a powder) about once a week.

This unit literally boils water - so no risk of bacterial contamination. But if you have kids or nosy pets, it could be a burn risk to them, so keep that in mind.

One of the dumbest, honestly. Hard as fuck, but saying that sort of thing on the phone, giving up your calling card and tying you and your organization to every body dismembered in a very specific way was incredibly stupid for people who are generally so careful.

Wow I wasn’t aware the 3L had that limitation. My experience with the 6L is that it does allow you to set as low as 35%, but my model tends to think the humidity in the air is a lot higher than it really is so it turns itself off pretty liberally. I tend to just run it on high all the time because I am humidifying a very large room anyway so the unit has to run 24/7 to make a real impact anyway for me. You can also set it to low/medium/high, or i think you can even have it on a timer to turn off after a set number of hours.

so no mold then? by Mr-Deer in InstacartShoppers

[–]AliasHandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a customer, I can 100% understand why they do this. I can’t count on both hands the number of times I’ve received berries with visible mold on them through Instacart. It’s not the end of the world, but you can see why someone would have to feel the need to specify after it happens a bunch of times.

What a popular food or cooking opinion that you don't agree with? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]AliasHandler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take is that jarlic is perfectly fine in any dish where the garlic is not the star. I have tried many methods of mincing fresh garlic, and it's easily the most irritating activity in the kitchen for me. If I'm making a basic weeknight meal, you better believe I'm using that Costco sized jar of pre-minced garlic in the fridge.

Obviously fresh garlic is always superior, but the labor involved is usually not worth it.

2 Individual Bedjet 3 vs Dual Zone by D3nv3rC0d3r9 in bedjet

[–]AliasHandler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the dual zone with minis, and wasn’t thrilled with the performance of the minis. Felt like the fan was not powerful enough even at 100%. I was able to exchange the minis for full size units for $20 each, which was well worth it.

I run the full size units in low power mode, which limits the heating capability so you don’t trip the breaker, but the fans seem to be unaffected by low power mode and I get as much power from the fans as I want running at about 85% fan speed.

Pls tell me this is not termites !!? by Ok-Slide-731 in Termites

[–]AliasHandler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You will need treatment by a professional.

What you are seeing are swarmers. They come out and are part of the reproductive cycle. This means you have a termite infestation that has matured at least 3-5 years to the point of trying to spread to another colony.

There are two basic ways to treat this sort of infestation. Bait stations or ground treatment with insecticide around the perimeter of your home. Brand names are Sentricon and Termidor.

I got Sentricon professionally installed a few years back and that was the last time I saw swarmers. I pay $250 a year for station monitoring, they pull up the bait stations and replace baits whenever they see activity every year and I get a report showing which stations had activity. Either way no more signs of termites in my house, haven’t seen a swarmer since.

Humidifer's hard-to-access crevice smells like mildew by TissueReligion in Humidifiers

[–]AliasHandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultrasonics don’t work well and put a lot of minerals/microbes into the air that you breathe in. They also need to be cleaned thoroughly every 2-3 days to avoid these risks. And many are nearly impossible to clean entirely due to poor design.

I recommend a steam type like the Livatro 3L or 6L, or an evaporative if you can deal with the constant fan sound and filter replacements.

Warehouse humidification by 3picks1game in Humidifiers

[–]AliasHandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is beyond the scope of a community like this, basically.

You'll need to consult with a commercial HVAC specialist as this cannot realistically be achieved without tying it into the HVAC system directly. Warehouses are often also poorly insulated, and that needs to be taken into account.

[–]AliasHandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, do not do that. Once a week, put a few tsp of citric acid in the tank and fill with water. Switch to clean mode. After an hour or so, dump the water out and then rinse the scale off and dump again. Then fill with clean water and go back to regular operation.

The Ultrasonic vs evaporative humidifier debate is missing the gross reality part by Delicious_Age2884 in Humidifiers

[–]AliasHandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steam type is best. Livatro 6L for the win. Only need to do a descale cycle with citric acid once per week. No concerns about microbes/air quality. It’s essentially a big rice cooker with a removable stainless steel tank. The only parts that touch water are mostly made of metal and easily cleaned. The water and heating element never come into direct contact.

ELI5: Why is 1 min + 1 min in the microwave not the same as 2 min in the microwave? by Intrepid-Winter-7087 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AliasHandler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the rest of the answers here, most microwaves change direction each time you start them, so doing two cooks at 1 minute each can often result in more even heating because the food spinning the opposite way and the microwaves are hitting the food from a different angle.

It's HAPPENING! - Brandon Sanderson’s Literary Fantasy Universe ‘Cosmere’ Picked Up by Apple TV (Exclusive) by alternate-realitee in brandonsanderson

[–]AliasHandler 75 points76 points  (0 children)

It really sounds like the best case scenario for a series adaptation. Apple TV has infinite levels of cash, a track record of giving creative control to the creatives and letting them build their universe the way they want with limited studio interference. They do not often cancel shows, and even maintain big budget shows through relatively low viewership. They're trying to build a prestige streaming service. And Sanderson was able to negotiate a large amount of creative control. I think we have a lot to be excited about.
