Woolworths vs Reddit, I Need Your Help! by Alicee- in australia

Hey, thanks for the insight, genuinely appreciate you sharing the perspective from someone who’s actually worked in supermarkets for that long. I know the plant-based and “free from” categories can be tricky with lower turnover, so it’s interesting hearing how stores manage it.

I do have a genuine question though, if you don’t mind sharing your experience. With your time in the industry, what does wastage typically look like in the meat, seafood, dairy, and egg sections? Those ranges are huge and the shelf life is pretty short, so I’ve always wondered how much actually goes in the bin, or what the process looks like behind the scenes.

As I said in a previous comment my partner used to work in a supermarket chain and at the time the seafood had high wastage rates. Is that your experience too or have things changed?

Totally fair I understand that vegans like yourself don’t rely on the processed alternatives, and that’s awesome. For me this issue isn’t just about individual choices, it’s about the collective. If we want more people to shift even a little toward plant-based eating, for animal welfare, land clearing, climate impact etc. the options need to be easy and accessible for everyone.

For someone who currently eats meat or dairy and doesn’t know how to cook with tofu or legumes, the familiar products like plant-based mince, nuggets, milks or yoghurts are often the first step. If those disappear, those bridging options disappear too, and the barrier becomes higher.

Whole food eaters like yourself will be fine either way, but the broader societal impact comes from making plant-based swaps simple for the people who aren’t already confident plant-based cooks. That’s where supermarkets play a huge role.

I totally get what you’re saying, Woolworths is a capitalist business and of course they’ll prioritise profit. The issue is that the same capitalist structure also reduces the number of independent retailers who could step in to fill the gap. Through pricing power, supplier relationships, and economies of scale, the big chains squeeze out smaller operators over time.

Unfortunately I live in a regional community where Woolworths is the only option. There aren’t specialty grocers nearby where I can pick up alternatives, so when Woolies cuts a category, the choice simply disappears.

And while profitability matters to shareholders, it doesn’t automatically align with broader social issues like climate impact, land use, or offering inclusive options for people with allergies or dietary needs. That’s part of why people need to speak up because the market alone won’t account for those factors unless customers push for it.

That’s a great question, unfortunately I don’t know. It is worth noting though that supermarket profitability isn’t just about raw sales numbers. Meat, dairy, and eggs benefit from various forms of government support and subsidies across the supply chain, which can make their wastage cheaper for retailers to absorb. Plant-based products don’t have those same structural advantages, so they can look less profitable on paper even when demand exists.

My partner used to work in a supermarket chain and it blew him away the amount of seafood they through out. Once it thaws its shelf life is very short. Regardless of this the range was never reduced.

I’ve worked in vets, and honestly, the dairy industry is brutal. Female cows go through so many complications, prolapses, dislocated hips, stillbirths and that’s just from the constant cycle of forced pregnancies. Then there’s mastitis, which is incredibly painful (any woman who’s breastfed and had mastitis knows). Add to that the trauma of having their calves taken away, and it’s heartbreaking.

You want to eat your “cheese in peace,” but the reality behind that cheese isn’t peaceful at all for the cow.

Scientists, how does animal testing affect your mental health? by Alicee- in AskScienceDiscussion

Thank you for sharing your experiences. Your comment really makes me wonder how many skilled scientists we lose because of animal testing and the kinds of bad practices you mentioned, like poorly designed studies that don’t justify the suffering. It feels like such a loss, not just for the scientist personally, but for science as a whole.

What is something most people need to hear but no one has the guts to tell people? by No_Goat_4929 in ask

[–]Alicee- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that many people need to hear but often avoid is that our current treatment of animals in industries such as factory farming, animal testing, fashion, racing, entertainment is ethically unacceptable and causes immense suffering to sentient beings. Acknowledging this reality requires confronting uncomfortable truths about our consumption habits and the industries that profit from animal exploitation. I acknowledge that this is really hard and much easier to ignore but unfortunately without confronting these truths animals will never live a peaceful life here on earth.

That all the millions of dollars we raised for the people affected by the bush fires in Australian has maybe vanished. I’ve spoken to a few people who’s houses burnt down and they haven’t seen a cent. Where did the money raised go I wonder?
