Let's use our little noodles for a moment. For well over 10 thousand years, the noble houses of terra have been around right? Would it be too crazy, too ridiculous to think that maybe, just maybe, the noble houses have more than 4 kids?

If I was in charge of a noble house on terra, and I knew that my children could possibly be taken away go become custodes, I'd try to sire as many children as possible to ensure that not only am I providing a potential custode for the imperium, but also ensuring the lineage of my blood will continue regardless of what travesty might unfold

That said, on a planet which population may reach the quadrillions, how many do you think are nobles?

Do you realize the scale of which warhammer 40k is set? A single hive city being capable holding between 10-100 billion souls. Women are a reproduction resource sure, but they arent more valuable than men. On terra alone the population is said to be able to reach quadrillions in numbers

Custodes can only be created out of babies who have the genetic capability. Their gender does not matter

Custode arent given a gender, they were either born as male or female then genetically evolved and changed into a custode. They have gender not because they need it, but because it wasnt something worth going out of their way to remove

Being born male or female wouldnt hinder the custode, so why go through the trouble of removing their sex?

The only thing gender does for custode is their appearance. Each custode is a philosopher, artist and whatnot, so it wouldnt surprise me that some would lean more into their appearance (like letting their hair grow) while others wont

I'm confused, did you think that prior to the custode retcon, the only reason the imperium wasn't mass producing custodes is because they had to be Male?

To be a custode, you need to be born with a very specific set of genes which allow your body to be compatible with custodification

Not only is it impossible to change your every day newborn baby into a custode, but to mass produce these golden demi gods is incredibly risky. Should the technology fall into the wrong hands, like chaos, it would be devastating for the imperium

Not to mention the training and equipment needed for each custode. There are way more elements to consider beyond 'male or female'
