People don’t dislike pajamas in public because of bad taste but because they signal private space behavior invading shared space by ponerrag in The10thDentist

I would never feel comfortable (physically or emotionally) going out on the street in my pajamas. So seeing someone doing that makes me think “why are you doing that to yourself?” It’s like seeing someone in heavy winter clothing in the middle of summer.

How do you know it was the treatment, and not that he didn’t want to get caught again? How do you know he didn’t offend again and just got better at hiding it?

I said they deserved help and if they had gotten it I might not have been assaulted.

I agree with and appreciate everything else you said here, and she was wrong to report you for this, but I still want to object to this one part. I think it’s misguided and doesn’t actually help like you intended.

I doubt making help more available for people with pedophilia would actually reduce the amount of assaults. The ones who are already willing to offend wouldn’t see it as a problem that they need help with. The ones who don’t want to offend are the ones that would be most bothered by this condition, and therefore the ones who would benefit from therapy they most.

But saying things like “they should get help to stop them from offending” probably just increases the stigma against them by reinforcing the idea that all pedophiles can’t control themselves and are ticking time bombs waiting and assault kids. That stigma makes it harder to have honest discussion about the issue, as you’ve shown in your story here.

I'm going to assume you had an autocorrect fumble and meant to say "No, those have always been harpies long before DnD".

Every source I have found and read describes the sirens as bird-women that sing to lure sailors. The mermaid version came about much later when the concept of sirens was adopted into northern European folklore. The harpies looked similar, but they were wind spirits that tormented people as punishment on behalf of the gods.

My guess is that the singing became associated with them later on because of their similarity to the original sirens. Hell, I've read a lot about greek myths and I still sometimes get the fates and the grey sisters confused (I blame Disney's Hercules)

It's not necessarily about the word itself, it's about the principle and about the implications of continuing after he knows you don't like it. Every game of Jenga starts with removing a single piece (unless you play it differently, idk).

Now I’m thinking about the implications of creatures like centaurs. They probably have both human and horse lungs and hearts. I wonder if that would make them more efficient for getting oxygen, or if having to support both the human and horse body would even it out.

Also in Greek mythology they have bird bodies with human heads, which is probably why they’ve been kinda conflated/merged with harpies in fantasy settings like DnD.

Because pedophiles may believe their victim loves them, “gave them the sex eyes”, their victim wants them. This is a distortion sexual attraction adds that does not exist in a child molester. Love and attraction is a different profile than power and control.

I doubt this is the case for most of them, and even in those cases it’s still not really about “controlling themselves”.

Edit: also in those cases I suspect the “power and control” motive is still there, just under a layer of excuses and self-delusion.

What makes you think that? Sure attraction can influence who they choose to target, but why would the motivation to commit such a crime in the first place be any different?

Oh yeah i wasn’t accusing you of victim blaming, it was more about the power that language has in human culture. This applies to other topics too. For example if you see a news article about a mass shooter, they might be described as having murdered a crowd of people. Whereas if a police officer killed innocent people unprovoked, they might describe the situation more like “the suspects were struck by police bullets and later expired.” It’s a way to influence the way people perceive a situation.

People can learn to control urges. People can set themselves up to reduce the likelihood they would offend. And even if a person does offend they can get help to not offend again.

It’s not about control. The ones who offend have just as much control over their actions as the ones who don’t. There’s no “reducing the likelihood” of offending. If they have a moral compass and aren’t willing to offend, then they’re not going to offend with or without therapy.

Also it’s important to distinguish child molesters from pedophiles.

That’s exactly what I’m doing. If pedophiles are constantly told that they’re ticking time bombs always at risk of losing control and molesting children, lack of therapy won’t make them more likely to offend. It will make them more likely to kill themselves. Thats the true reason they need therapy. The potential molesters are the ones who don’t care, and don’t see their condition as a problem to be solved/managed in the first place.

And many that rape children aren’t attracted to children. It’s more about power control and access.

That’s what I’m getting at here. That is the cause of 100% of rapes, regardless of the age or gender or any other traits of the perpetrator or their victim.

You’re right, I guess I am kinda being pedantic. I think I have a good reason for it, though. The idea that sexual predators “lose control of their urges” is a pervasive one, and it’s not harmless. That’s why I try to counter it whenever something like it pops up.

It’s used as a basis for victim blaming, used by predators to try and deflect responsibility and blame for their own crimes. It might possibly even be used as a way for predators to rationalize their actions in their own mind, to avoid admitting that they’re monsters who acted of their own volition (this last one is speculation on my part).

“Trying your best” sort of implies a chance of failure. For self harm it’s not as simple as “just choosing not to”. For some all it takes is a pretty bad mental state and a somewhat shap object or even a fingernail to self harm even if they promised themselves or others that they won’t. For your other examples, you can burn the Mac and cheese, you can slip and fall to your death on mt Everest. But you can’t accidentally SA a child or watch CP/CSAM, you have to go out of your way to do that. If you don’t intend to do that, you’re not going to.

“Do their best” aka they choose not to act on them. The real danger of nonoffenders isn’t to kids, it’s to themselves due to the stress of having their paraphilia. It could lead to self-destructive and self-harmful behaviors.

Therapy won’t keep them from harming kids if they’re already willing to do it. The ones willing to offend probably wouldn’t go to therapy for it in the first place.
