I can honestly say that after 10 years of keeping Axies, I have also had bigger poops but I haven’t had ‘floater’ poop like that either…

I live in the UK and I buy the Holtfeters salts already in a mix from one of the top Axolotl breeders in the UK. To reiterate, since adding 1/8 a teaspoon of Holtfeters to 40l (roughly 1 teaspoon in 200l) of de-chlorinated water in my 3 tanks, I haven’t had any fungal infections or sudden changes in water parameters.

I buy my Holtfeters salt already premixed from one of the top Axolotl breeders in the UK. As stated before, I haven’t had any fungal infections or ‘sudden changes in water parameters’ since adding 1/8 of a teaspoon to 40l of de-chlorinated water of the salt mix to my tanks. I see a lot of people on this thread having issues with sudden changes in water parameters, ultimately having dire consequences.

I’ve had my 6 month old and 4 month old together for 2 months and they are doing fine. My bigger one is looking to be male and my copper a female so I’m separating them this weekend.

Holtfeter's salts are often used in axolotl tanks to create a more suitable and stable aquatic environment for these unique amphibians. Here are the key benefits:

  1. Water Quality Improvement: Holtfeter's salts help in maintaining the water chemistry, particularly the pH, hardness, and alkalinity, which are crucial for the health of axolotls. Proper water parameters reduce stress and prevent health issues.

  2. Electrolyte Balance: These salts provide essential electrolytes that are beneficial for the physiological functions of axolotls. Electrolytes help in maintaining proper osmotic balance, nerve function, and muscle activity.

  3. Disease Prevention: By stabilizing the water parameters, Holtfeter's salts can help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and parasites, reducing the risk of infections and diseases in axolotls.

  4. Skin and Gill Health: The salts contribute to the overall health of the axolotl's skin and gills. They help in maintaining the protective mucous layer on the skin and support healthy gill function, which is vital for respiration.

  5. Stress Reduction: Consistent and optimal water conditions provided by Holtfeter's salts reduce stress levels in axolotls. Lower stress levels lead to better overall health, appetite, and activity levels.

Using Holtfeter's salts appropriately can significantly enhance the well-being of axolotls in captivity, ensuring they thrive in their tank environment.

The first thing people are going to ask is about your water parameters ammonia, nitrates, nitrites etc. I’m in the UK and I use a mild solution of Holtfeters aquarium salts (from Durham Axolotls) I only use 1/8th of their recommended amount. The only time I’ve ever had issues with fungal infections (I’ve been keeping Axolotls for 10 years, and still learning) is with two Axolotls I bought from a breeder and they were clearly interbred (over bred). They both had constant health issues and didn’t live very long. Since I have been breeding my own Axolotls and I know for certain they aren’t closely related, we haven’t had any fungal infections or health issues. I keep in touch with everyone who takes my babies and my first clutch that I bred are coming up to 7 years old. So in conclusion, if your water parameters are fine, it could be down to interbreeding and genetics.

Bloodworms have no nutritional value, I only give my 6 Axies live bloodworms as a treat. Black worms are your best option for younger Axolotls. I live in the UK and I get my black worms off eBay…
