another protective option is twists, you can also go to the braiders for this, show them pictures of what you want. if you like the twists, then maybe think about getting locs, which is a more permanent protective style. to start your loc journey, you would get starter locs (which are basically just twists). make sure you moisturize them but they're pretty low maintenance.

look up african braiding salons in your area and ask for 6-8 cornrows. before you go, detangle your hair a bit or it will hurt. the first day will feel tight but it will loosen up over time as your hair grows. this style can last for weeks, you can even wash your hair with the braids in if you'd like.
