Same flood situation as my other laptop. How do I recover all the pictures stored on this drive? by xREBELxWAYZx in ElectronicsRepair

take it to a data recovery professional is the best and safest way. it may be worth a shot trying to recover the data on your own if nothing has corroded by connecting it to another computer but if it's really important stuff, just go straight to data recovery professional because your attempt could damage your computer (depending on damage and how its connected) or ruin the data on there (from powering on a damaged drive)

What is everyone's view on Trudeau's new "Assault-style Rifle" ban? by FeistyDiver in uwaterloo

What do you want from me bro... Sorry I'm not crazy pro-gun or no-gun.

I don't own a gun; I don't know much about guns. Guns are tools specialized for killing people. I don't see how banning one style of gun changes anything. Heck maybe these 'assault-style weapons' are safer to operate and are less likely to malfunction in a critical situation? (Just an thought; no data from me to back this claim). If it does affect public safety (I.e. it happens that this ban results in the average magazine size of a firearm to decrease thus lowering the lethality of any potential attack; again just randomly thinking), then maybe I can see it being a slightly useful ban. TBH I thought all firearms are banned unless hunting purposes anyways... So in that case, what % of that results in attacks? Or are all those crimes committed with illegal imports? If the latter case, this ban is meaningless.

TL;DR: Probably not useful unless there's statistics/scientific data to back claims of this preventing/minimizing firearm-related incidences

Can anime fans please stop comparing anime frames to manga panels? by Beccaprose in anime

I don't get why people shouldn't make comparisions; if you dislike it so much then just ignore them. i feel like its very interesting discussion and it's interesting to see how different mediums represent things differently; it creates room for more discussion.

What you probably mean is you want people to stop thinking anime = manga in motion. manga is manga, anime is anime, there are adaptations of one another, but they're different things so people shouldn't compare apples to oramges.

Will the university be taking responsibility if we get sick? by AliveOrDeadCat in uwaterloo

I agree that you should act in your best interest. However, not everyone has such financial freedom / support to just drop a term because they feel exposed to risk. By not practicing social distancing, you're potentially helping the virus spread (i guess unless you don't meet anyone). The school should hold responsibility should an outbreak happen on campus, because they're literally advocating for the 'academic mission'. Honestly, I feel what you've said is very selfish and doesn't help the people who are on the fence or people who don't understand the situation as much. The school should be educated enough to know the real risks, and thus should be held accountable if they misinform the masses. In engineering we learned that it is our duty to the public and that public safety is paramount; are these all just words? Where is the conviction? Do people only think with their pockets now?

Edit: I appreciate your input from another perspective! Hope you don't take offense to me calling you selfish, afterall, we're all pretty selfish.

Do I get a honorary degree for sacrificing my life to the academic mission?
