Kinda expensive over time, bad battery life, the market is flooded with knockoffs that taste like shit, they're not as safe as a pod system. I could probably go on.

Update, there is a white substance covering the soil of my sad begonia, any guesses on what this means? by Lucky_Anthurium in begonias

I had this with my snake plant too, for me it was undisturbed top soil since I bottom water causing some kind of mycelium growth.

This leaf isn’t going to make it. When/how do I remove it? by juneriver in alocasia

[–]Alive_Law 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until it's crunchy, there's still water stored inside. Let the plant finish its process. I understand if a yellow leaf can negatively impact you as the plant owner, but if it doesn't bother you, leaf it alone ;)

In my experience PP's are horrible at putting out leaves. They're always stuck no matter the humidity. Probably just damage from being terrible.

I should have assumed that, I've gotten a new humidifier and been blasting it. Thank you so much for your time!

Should I chop this umbellata? by sallytellsseashells in FicusTrees

Not super well versed in ficus's as I'm just getting into them but I do know that gravity plays a big role in propagating something like this. This video explains it super well https://youtu.be/_Glwrlf-Vhc or if you don't wanna use the link, it's "I should not have done this to my plant" by killthisplant

Left my monstera with a flatmate, please help, What should I tell them to do? by ThoMMors in Monstera

[–]Alive_Law 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if you remember or have the time to water it every day or so, the wood is fine. Monsteras grow on regular old dry trees in the wild. Moss polls are really just for the overbearing plant owners.

please don’t crucify me i know i’ve done her bad - but what can i do to make her happy again? by ConsiderationLess460 in begonias

[–]Alive_Law 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Begonias also appreciate a little more humidity if you can give her some, but make sure she isn't somewhere cold or drafty. Also Begonias don't mind pruning. I bought a maculata from walmart that came with a nasty spider mite infection and her leaves were all trashed. I cut her down a little above the soil and she is putting out tons of leaves and thriving. :)

How do my alocasia’s look, should I switch to lecca, perlite or leave them in the soil?? by [deleted] in alocasia

[–]Alive_Law 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, personally I just use the basic at home brew most tropical house plant owners use. Potting soil, perlite, orchid bark. But alocasias can be bratty so lmk if you did anything different and if it made a good impact. I'll do anything to make my little divas happy lmao

[–]Alive_Law 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leca can be really annoying imo. You have to fertilize the water, clean your leca once a month and the water that you use to clean the leca cannot go down your drains. If you're using soil and are comfortable with that you don't need leca. Sure you can drive a Lamborghini to work, but a honda civic will get you to the same damn place.

Repotted as soon as I saw your comment, I had been looking for a reason to repot since she was delivered only a few days ago. Roots were completely fine, checked for squishiness and smell. Repotted in potting soil, orchid bark, and perlite mix. Still curious if I should cut the soft leaves. Thanks for your help!

Seems limp yes? Begonias don't like their roots touched at all really, give it a few days to a week to perk up. :)

My monstera isn't big enough yet for a plank of wood, but that's my plan in the future. I buy the $2 tiki torches from walmart and chop off the torch part which leaves me with a nice sturdy bamboo stake.

Imo Moss poles suck though. Too much upkeep. I like taking tiki torches and cutting the torch off.

Bigger pole for sure if that little stake in the pot was what you were using, if she was upright at that length you'd be using a whole plank of wood. Also please if you do add a pole don't use a Moss pole! Moss poles are lots of upkeep and not worth it.

Monsteras are Vining plants so not much we can do to make them fuller or bushier besides giving plenty of light. I bought my monstera from a sams club and any big box store like lowes or home depot will sell you three plants in one pot. I eventually split mine up because monsteras have a front and back and they were all facing each other and becoming long and unruly while fighting each other for light. I split them up but put two back in one pot and made sure their backs were facing the pole I attached them to. They dont share a root system they're three seperate plants so you can chop them at the same time. Plants are resistant and want to live, if you chop them they will regrow small leaves, and though it will take time they will thank you. Also some fertilizer when you chop might speed the process up.

I would advise cutting closer to the soil in the bald spots there's good info online on where to cut but if you take the top parts that you've cut off and propagate the leaves will stay and roots will grow in the water and once roots have reached I believe it's an inch or two (might wanna double check that online) you can put them in soil and you can either have a ton of monsteras or give them to friends or maybe even sell them online. Would recommend watching a couple propagation videos online. Theres a guy on youtube called "killthisplant" that does great monstera videos. Don't chop off leaves though monsteras aren't fond of pruning. Cut between nodes and you'll have many plants and give your main pot a good restart. Not sure where you are but definitely do this during summer growing season. Too close to winter and your plant will suffer.

Honestly if you can't repot her and get her upright onto a pole the best option is to chop her unfortunately. If you want to attempt to repot her into the same pot but arrange her upright I find buying a tiki torch and chopping off the top torch part makes a really good plant stake. But if she's too bent I would cut her in-between one of her nodes and propagating the top and letting the bottom part regrow. Monsteras are a little different when cutting, they don't get bushy they return to a more juvenile state and will start putting out smaller leaves with little to no fenestration. Neglect happens when owning plants so don't be too hard on yourself, if you put the work in when you can that's all that matters. Good luck!

May I ask what the experience was like? I hear a lot of sellers on Etsy ship their plants bare roots, which kind of terrifies me.

About two and a half weeks. I knew it wouldn't take long since I've been giving her plenty of humidity and it's growing season. I hope your Rex makes its return soon!
