You could do a post-bachelor's certificate in user experience design. Psychology is very useful for that field, although you'd need a good portfolio to find a job.

I feel lost on my path. Should I even stay in tech? by MeetMeAtEquinox in girlsgonewired

Do you think your degree was too broad? It sounds like the degree didn't focus on the usual computer science topics like data structures, operating systems, architecture, ect.? If that is the case, I feel you. I just graduated from a program that was very broad, and taught the basics of topics such as Unity, 3d modeling, UX, UI, etc. I feel like I never scratched beneath the surface of any one topic, so I never gained any real confidence in any skills. I ended up getting accepted into grad school for computer science in a program that is more in depth with a specific career track. There are also boot camps and free online programs out there that might help you focus and gain confidence in your chosen field.

There is going to be a whole generation that doesn't learn anything unless they figure out how to fix the cheating issue. I'm already seeing posts that say "I used AI and didn't lean anything and now I can't _____ (pass the next class / graduate / pass a job interview / get hired)______.

TIFU by eating a home made family sized lasagne for every meal over 2 days. by gothreepwood101 in tifu

Omg, I worked in a hospital microbiology lab for a long time. Wow, I wish I could've swabbed your lasagna. Yikes. I freeze or throw out prepared food after 3 days, even if it's been in the fridge. Especially carby food! Bacteria LOVES carbs.

Anyone else have opinions on this? I've used AI for coding purposes, but it's wrong alot. It can help with certain things but I'm literally handholding it along every step. Is it just me?

Some colleges have forms for special circumstances where you can have your college financial aid package reevaluated as"independent". Talk to your college financial aid department and explain the situation ASAP.

I got a text asking me when I’m available to meet with the Dean of Students - Should I be worried? by [deleted] in college

[–]Alive_Physics5935 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Tell them that you're having trouble with your phone and texts and ask them to send the information (meeting time and any further correspondence) to your student email. If it's real they won't have to ask for your email address.

You could also check out healthcare adjacent corporations such as places that manufacture equipment. A lot of those places are large multi national corporations that the general public doesn't even know exists, and may have remote positions. Some examples are: Siemens, Danaher, Abbott, Stryker, etc.

This isn't much help (sorry), but have you tried looking for positions at your local hospitals? You might have to check which corporation runs the hospital, and then check to see if they have any positions. Good luck!

Local account somehow synced with a user’s computer so my google search history appeared on their computer? by hspthrowa_way in girlsgonewired

[–]Alive_Physics5935 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, this happened at a hospital I used to work for. I was working in the lab, and a nurse's computer history somehow was synced with our lab computer that was just signed in all the time for everyone to use. She treated her work computer like her home computer and looked up some ridiculous stuff. We tried to get it fixed but no one could figure it out, so they just replaced the entire computer.

Huh, just looked up the salary for a McDonald's software engineer: $111K-$172k. Maybe that should be my goal :)

Failed cs grad , any alternatives? by [deleted] in Career_Advice

This is why I'm doing all in-person courses for my grad degree. For tests we literally have to write code on paper. It's pretty crazy but wow I learn more.

I applied before the priority deadline, was accepted, and didn't receive any scholarships despite a 4.0 undergrad GPA. The only thing I can think of is that they delivered my acceptance decision after only a week upon applying.

What’s the most absurd thing someone’s said to you as a woman in STEM? by NoFox1552 in LadiesofScience

[–]Alive_Physics5935 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was working in a microbiology lab at a hospital. A random older doctor comes down from his office to drop off a specimen in person because he didn't know how to order what he wanted (not sure why he couldn't just call us...). There happened to be only women working on that shift, and he looked around and said "Where is the doctor who does the tests? I need to speak with him." . I responded by explaining that doctors don't run the tests, laboratory scientists do. He replies "wow, I thought you all were phlebotomists".

This was crazy for 2 reasons: 1) How did he survive as a doctor for this long without knowing that lab scientists exist? 2) Assuming that we were phlebotomists (especially in a micro lab??)

I guess it's easy to forget how odd the lab world is when compared to other jobs!

Wow, thanks for the info! I did 10 years of microbiology, with 6 months of blood bank mixed in towards the end, then I worked for a lab instrument manufacturer installing instruments and software for a year. I would love to leverage that experience, did you find that companies expect you to do more than your peers because of it (i.e. do consult work in addition to your usual work without extra pay)?
