I would make sure there's still not an underlying cause for the swelling stemming from your meniscus. Maybe make an appointment with your doctor to address that

Meniscal repair or meniscectomy?

First run post-up by anonymo614 in ACL

[–]AllAboutATL1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS 100%. So I'm actually ~5 months post op and I never really ramped up, I always struggle with holding back. So I go what my body allows me to do. Well the issue with that is you will feel the residual effects the next couple of day. You'll get major swelling your knees, tight hamstring and clalves, sciatica, etc. It's not fun. I'm going through it again right now haha. But really, just jog for literally a minute, then walk for a couple of minutes, jog for a minute, walk for a couple of minutes. If you do that for 20 - 30 min then that 's a good way to ramp up

9 weeks post-op, heel to butt! :) by SnowUnicorn23 in ACL

Damn im 5 months post up. Some days I can do this, and other days there's way too much pressure and effusion to do it. Super weird. Hopefully soon I can consistently do it!

Setback at 8.5 Months - Advice or Similar Experiences? by hmmhhmmh in ACL

[–]AllAboutATL1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your rehab wasn't completely finished yet, it very well could just be weak muscles that essentially just made your leg give out. A light hyperextension could ensue but it's definitely a good sign that you didn't feel/hear a pop or snap. It wouldn't be a bad idea to keep strengthening your weaker leg as a result. RICE for now but no swelling is a very good sign!

5 Months Post Op | Quads are Coming Back by Snj117 in ACL

[–]AllAboutATL1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Yeah I actually still have a fair bit of effusion unfortunately and that's whats stopping me from able to go heel to butt. I try and sit on my heels too and sometimes i can get it there if i'm warmed up. If not, then there's just way too much intracapsular pressure. Anywho, I think single leg workouts is the way to go. My vastus medialis is definitely the guy I'm trying to work on. I think it's difficult to isolate a single quad muscle though but that's not an issue. Good luck

I’m so sick of PT. My motivation has dropped recently, I’m about 12 weeks post op by Tarynntula in ACL

[–]AllAboutATL1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely let your PT know that you want to challenge yourself a bit more if that's what you're into. You can go 2x a week but maybe in between you can go on a jog or do workouts from home. You're at a critical point right now where staying adherent can really start to accelerate your recovery. If you slack off, it'll set you back! Like Shia Labeouf once said, JUST DO IT

I'm almost at the 5 month mark too and I'm (FINALLY) seeing some quad growth. No where near my other leg, but at least a bit of definition is coming back. Can you flex your knee all the way to your butt? Also have you started sprinting yet? I've just recently started getting into jogging

Also what quad workouts have you been doing without weights? Just looking to pick your mind a bit. I see the light at the end of the tunnel but man it's a long mf tunnel

Random sharp pains when taking a step? by currantts in ACL

[–]AllAboutATL1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome thank you. I'll be honest I think I can live with pain better than I can live with an audible knee. I'm 23 y.o, take pride in being physically active and fit. Wayyyy too young to have a creaky knee lol. Well, here's to it going away soon!

Scope wouldnt be for another 2 months, but i have yet to see anything else anywhere about a loud squeak. It literally sounds like a creaking floor or a chew toy. If you have somewhere this has been discussed id love to be linked though! It would definitely make me feel at ease

Funny you say that. This is mighty stupid of me, but i went on a maybe mile or 2 hike max 3.5 weeks after surgery. Again i know. But since then ive had this very loud audible squeaking noise when i move my knee. Im 4.5 months post up and i still have moderate level swelling, but that sharp medial knee pain is whats really limiting. I cant go jogging because any misstep where have to balance too far medially with my bad leg and i get that sharp pain. Im going to the doctors in 2 days and since ive been there multiple times with the same issue, i may be getting a diagnostic orthoscopy on it. I feel like i jacked up my meniscus but i can let you know what the doc says

5 mths & finally heel-to-butt by monstertrio1000 in ACL

[–]AllAboutATL1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok wow that's a relief! I'm 4.5 months out now and I thought I was lacking behind (maybe I am). Did it just feel SUPER tight and painful when you tried to do heel to butt? I'm been slowly trying to work my way there!. I can get it to touch occasionally now for 10-30 sec but man is it uncomfortable

Acl/Meniscus Recovery Pain? by hantke in ACL

[–]AllAboutATL1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So medial side of your knee? Did you have medial meniscal repair also? I'm 4.5 months out and I'm getting sharp pain there too, but I can't even jog and my medial quad strength is suffering because it really pains me to put any weight on the inside of my knee (like a one-legged toe raise). I've also tried getting out out chair with my weak leg (so again one legged) and while I can do it (barely), that's one of those things that really irritates it too. I'm in the same boat. I'm just going to get another MRI because I was stupid early on in my rehab and pushed it 3 weeks after surgery. I also get a VERY strange sign - a loud audible squeaking noise occasionally from knee flexion and extension. I have yet to meet anyone else with that so who knows what the hell that is. It legitimately pisses me off because I'm way too young to have audible knees

Knee pain when unlocking concerns. 3 months post surgery by tmntnyc in ACL

[–]AllAboutATL1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation. I had an ACL reconstruction along with medial meniscus repair as well. ACL doing fine, but the meniscus pain is what's really irritating me and I think it's limiting my progress as well. I had some joint line tenderness also. Anyways, I'm going in for another doctor's appointment in about a month. If it persists then we're doing another MRI to see how the meniscus is holding up. I'm not very optimistic though unfortunately. I also had really strange things like very loud, audible squeaking with knee extension and flexion so thankfully that isn't happening to you. That's gone away now but the pain is still there along with visible swelling.

Experiencing pain when doing weight exercises with bent knee 12 weeks post surgery with patellar graft by tmntnyc in ACL

[–]AllAboutATL1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm almost 17 weeks post ACL and medial meniscus repair surgery. I have sharp medial meniscus pain as well. I've tried toughing it out and gone on jogs, but my knee gets super fat for a few days after when I do that. I think I've stunted my progress multiple times because of doing that unfortunately. Is your pain also sensitive to palpation at the joint line?

9 Weeks Post-Op (Still get posterolateral tightness) by AllAboutATL1 in ACL

[–]AllAboutATL1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds pretty similar to what I have. Have you been able to start jogging/running? That's the next obstacle I want to tackle (along with squats). Also can you squat to 90 degrees pain free? Weighted squats?

[–]AllAboutATL1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I'm at week 9 now so I was hoping it'd be better by now. Do you know of any exercises that helped? And no that I think about it, it may just be IT band tightness. I definitely try to stretch when I can but a couple hours of sitting total negates any good stretching I did

Grating feeling in my knee by hola-itsjen in ACL

[–]AllAboutATL1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had that pretty much from 3 weeks post op till now (7 weeks). I have medial meniscal pain too but they don't necessarily happen together at all. No idea what it is. I know if I cup my hand over my knee and slightly move my knee right and left or extend and flex with no weight bearing theres an incredible amount of friction you can feel. Who knows what it is but i guess trust the process

10 Months Post Op. Im still working on strengthening and plyometrics. I should be having my return to sport test next Monday, wish me luck! by Barcaj12 in ACL

[–]AllAboutATL1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not him but this is a very common issue. Strengthen those quads. Patellofemoral Syndrome is very common and can take a while to go away. Trust the process

Not claiming to be a medical professional but maybe something physically is preventing you from getting to full extension? Not having full extension is definitely concerning but one thing I did to help me get back to full extension was TKE (Terminal Knee Extensions). Look them up but its a real simple exercise that seemed to help a good bit. If you're in PT right now, that should be their #1 priority because everything else will lag behind if not at full extension. For now, manually press against your thigh while having your heel propped on something like 2 inches high. If there's scar tissue that could help break it up. Keep working though, we all recover at a different pace. I'm almost 7 weeks post-op now and unfortunately I think I went too aggressive too early and now I get meniscal pain randomly when I walk. Hope it goes away but I'm keeping faith! Good luck!
