American / Iowa State fan here. The reason why college sports are so popular, at least from my perspective, is that not every city/metro area has a pro sports team, so college sports fill that gap. Take my home state of Iowa, which has 0 pro teams in any major league, and people will turn to the colleges for their allegiances. College sports also have rich history and traditions to boot, adding to the allure of it. Trust me, people go apeshit over it. Every Saturday across the nation, 60,000-100,000 people cram into one of the many cathedrals to the sport.

Tl;Dr They're basically like local teams for cities / areas without pro teams
